Free iPhone Background // Fries > Guys

The other day while playing around in one of my favorite overlay apps on my phone I created a hilarious phone background for myself that I wanted to share with you today.  If you haven't downloaded it, Rhonna Designs (+ all the other associated apps) is a great app to play with!  There are tons of inspiring overlays for free and even cooler ones for purchase.
I'm going to be bold here and say this - when I first downloaded this app I was turned off by the number of religiously oriented overlays there were.  For someone who is super religious I think this is a great app to reaffirm your faith and share your faith with others.  But for someone who isn't religious I was sad that some of the beautifully design text overlays I was drawn too had a religious tone.

The design and offerings of this app are amazing - florals, beautiful fonts, tips for pairing fonts, great doodles and overlays, wonderful controls for text, and new sizes including those that would be perfect for creating planner dashboards!  Additionally there are quite a few overlay packs available for purchase that have some great sayings.

That is precisely what I found when I went to play around in the app again.  I love the fun packs Pretty & Punny.  There are cute little hand drawn graphics that rock!

So....long story short, I was able to create this positive little background for my phone.  The fries > guys saying means to me take care of yourself, do the things you love, be the person you are before worrying about others, especially dudes.  I hope this little background inspires you.  You can find the lock screen here and the home screen here.  Simply download and set them as your wallpapers on your device.  This is designed for an iPhone 6s so you may have to scale the image to fit your specific device.

Make it Monday // DIY Home State Art in PicMonkey

You probably already know that I have a thing for states.  Like some people love monograms, I love our states.  (See posts here & here for proof.)  One of my favorite dingbat fonts is State Face (See my other favorites in this post!).  A pretty cool feature of PicMonkey that I love to use is adding the fonts I've downloaded to my computer into my designs.  Today I want to share how to make a fun little state print using PicMonkey.  You can adjust this print to make journaling cards, a post card, a background for your phone or your tablet, stickers for your planner, or just to hang on your wall when you're far from home.
this post contains affiliate links, please read my disclosure here

Supplies - PicMonkey.com, State Face font (free download), pattern from ColourLovers.com, printer, choice of paper (photo paper, card stock, etc) paper trimmer
First I browsed ColourLovers.com to find a pattern I liked.  This site is one of my favorite resources for free for personal use patterns.  There are so many colors, designs, and patterns to choose from.  I saved the largest resolution option and opened it in PicMonkey.  I decided to make a print 5x7 so I cropped the image down to that size.
Using the font option I added the State Face font to my canvas and decided to go with our current state, Indiana.  Just type out the alphabet until you find your sate shape, there is even the USA shape in the mix too.  Since there aren't any grid lines in PicMonkey, I eyeballed the center of the canvas and placed the state there.  I also used the fade option to change the opacity of the state I chose.
Of course you could be done here but I wanted to add a nice quote about home to my print.  I used another font from my computer but PicMonkey has a ton of free fonts.  But if you'd like to upgrade to Royale you get access to a bunch more fonts, effects, and overlays.  I subscribe yearly for $33/year.  There is a monthly subscription as well for $4.99/month.  Not to bad for an amazing photo editor and mini design machine!  If you're interested in signing up, please click here.

I usually print images through Picasa.  Picasa offers size options to print your images/photos so you don't have to make any sizing adjustmenst.

I hope this little DIY was inspiring for you.  I am going to put this as my home screen on my phone since Zach will be heading to Korea again soon.  We're also almost done with the house so Home has a whole different meaning too.  Even though I've been out of Virginia for nearly 4 years I still get homesick every now and then.  I think it would be neat to make a whole set of prints with where we came from and where we are now.

What quotes about home to you love?  Do you ever get homesick?

xoxo, Moe

ps. Find all my PicMonkey tutorials here and all the DIY's on the blog here.  If you'd like to have the iPhone background click here, for the 5x7 print click here, for the 3x4 journaling card click here.  All are .jpg images so right click and save the image to your desktop.

All of a Sudden, Summer Collapsed into Fall

I can't believe the summer is over. Really I can't. It seem just yesterday the yard was filled with fireflies. Really, honestly there were hundreds of glowing insects all over. July was my favorite month this summer because it just looked like I'd stepped on a movie set with all the glowing bugs! (I talked about my summer memories more in this post, if you want to read.)
But all of a sudden chilly weather is upon us here in north west Indiana and while I can't get enough I'm also a little bit sad that Summer faded away! It seemed like as soon as it hit September 1st the air got crisper. I was half expecting leaves to be on the ground by September 10th but honestly they've just begin to fall. They are turning the most beautiful shades of red & yellow. I can't believe that it is already the start of October! This month (October) marks our 3rd anniversary of being together and our 2nd anniversary of being in our house, annnnnnnd we embark on finally working on the upstairs! We have a big dumpster in our driveway, have yanked up the carpet, padding, and tack strips and are getting ready to go for it. It is going to be another long journey but the end will be very awesome. We are adding a 3rd bedroom to the upstairs in the area that used to be the old living room. So there are walls that need to be put up, outlets that need to be moved, etc and it's going to be a lot of work.

I also just bought a car! I mean a brand new car (and I'm not trying to brag) but I'm pretty proud of myself for making such a big decision. I hate (hate) making huge decisions. Though I've always considered myself pretty good at accepting change, I don't think I'm very good at making changes myself. I like things to be the way they always have been - the only big change or big decision I made with very little hesitation was moving up to be with Zach. But I like things to be the way they always have been and I think I'd fallen pretty hard for him and I'm pretty sure that's worked out for the best. But when it comes to decisions I don't like many choices. Buying a car is FULL OF CHOICES. I was telling my friend that the reason I chose Apple over an Adroid phone is because there are so fewer choices - the only choice is the color. Same for computer, I just have to choose small, medium, or large (MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac). With Android you have to not only decide color but brand, and there are a lot of brands. Nope, I want it simple - Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry. Buying a car was hard becuase not only do you have to decide on car - make, model, style, price range - but you're pulled in different directions by different institutions. I like that all my other car decisions were made for me because this one was really hard. And I had to do it with in a week and had to do it with out Zach here. It was scary and stressful.

All of a sudden we're in this time of change. I've never felt fall creep up on me like this before and it really feels like Summer just collapsed into fall.  If you feel that all of a sudden Summer collapsed into Fall, too then you can have this image free in three different formats:

Download the 8x10 print here, the 3x4 journal card here, and the iPhone 5/5s background here.

Make it Monday // Create a Custom iPhone Homescreen with CocoPPa

A while ago I found out about an iPhone app named CocoPPa where you could swap out you app icon images for prettier more awesome ones.  I did a little research & decided it was probably way too complicated to do & would take a lot of my time (but I was wrong).  Finally the other night I got bored & decided to open the app to mess around.  Well, out came a wonderful new homescreen thanks to the app!  Night well spent - in fact it was super simple - and now I have a prettier phone!  Below I'll give you some step by step instructions, helpful hints, & important tips:
Getting Started
First you'll need to download CocoPPa (you can do so by clicking here!) then you'll need to create an account.  Set aside a bit of time if you're going to be making a whole home screen or you can just swap app icons out as you please.  You can also use CocoPPa for wall papers but I find that image searches or even ColourLovers are great resources for patterned backgrounds.  (If you've seen any of my ColourLovers tutorials you can even go make your own!)

The Rundown - What Does CocoPPa do?
CocoPPa lets you swap out the app icon or image associated with your installed app by creating a shortcut through Safari.  You must still keep the original app. DO NOT DELETE the original app in other words, you need to keep it so the shortcut knows where to go.  Simply move all the apps you've swapped over to another page - like the last page or into a folder by placing one app on top of another - but do not delete them!  You'll also need to keep the CocoPPa app on your phone.

It will also take a bit - a second, not even - to open the app when you click it's swapped icon.  Since you're creating a shortcut, tapping on the swapped icon redirects you to the app.  It's not as instant as tapping on the app itself, which you have kept in a separate folder on your phone.  So you may want to pretty up only a few app icons.  Try it out. See what you think, personally I'm not bothered.

As you will see below, unfortunately some apps - standard apps like camera, notes, phone & calculator - can't be swapped.  I'll show you some ways around this but it involved downloading other apps in place.  Just letting you know a bit before we get into it :)

Swapping Downloaded Apps
So, once you've created your account you can begin to find icons for the apps you'd like to swap.  This may take a while as you can search through what I'm sure are millions of icons!  You can sort by color, category, & tags or you can search by name at the bottom of the home page.  You can even upload your own but I haven't tried that yet.  The homepage also shows you new & popular icons...so you can look through there if you like.
Let's start with swapping out a downloaded app like Tumblr.  Begin by searching for your app name at the bottom of the home page, in this case Tumblr.  You'll be led to pages & pages & PAGES of icons! Just flip through until you find one you like.  If you want to compare a few, tap the image & tap like next to the icon.  This will add it to your likes.  See your likes by going to Mypage at the bottom of the app.  Compare & choose!  Once you've found one you like, you're ready to swap.
Tap the icon.  Once you're taken to it's page click Set up Link.  You'll tap App Search to find the app to swap.  Type in the app name & select the app from the results.  Depending on your app, you may have to flip through a few pages.  This is what I had to do to find my alarm clock app.  Cocoppa will let you know if you have the app on your phone or if you need to download it as well.
Now, name your app.  Give it a new name or the original name of the app (my G-Whizz! app for all things Google says blogs & news, for example).  Tap OK to begin setting up the shortcut.  You'll be redirected to a Safari page.  Follow the directions & add the image to your home screen.
Now, you'll be taken back to your phone's app pages where you will see the icon you just added.  Sweet!  Now put the new icon wherever you want by holding your finger on it until it starts to shake.  Move the old icon to the last page of your phone or into a folder but remember DO NOT DELETE THE APP ITSELF!  If you ever want to delete the shortcut you made, simply hold your finger on the icon until it starts to hover then press the black x.  You won't delete the original app, just it's shortcut.  Remember, do not delete the original app.  If you do, the shortcut won't know where to direct you to!

Swapping Standard iPhone Apps
Like I mentioned before, some app icons can not be switched out for these pretty icons - namely phone, camera, notes, calculator, weather - but there are ways to work around it.  First we'll swap out photos by using a url redirect.
Start the same way as before by finding an icon that you love.  When searching photos, I didn't find an icon I liked so I started looking for miscellaneous icons.  I chose a flower since the original photo app has a flower icon just so I could recognize it, that's just me.  Choose whatever you'd like.

Once you've found an app, tap Set up Link.  Instead of finding an app in the App Search feature, select the URL feature.  It is here we are going to type the redirect - photos-redirect:// - instead of a url, then tap done.  A full list is below:
photos - photos-redirect://
music - music://
mail - mailto://
text message - sms://
videos - videos://
maps - maps://
calendar - calshow://
safari - (use any url) http://www.google.com
itunes - http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=156093464&id=156093462&s=143441
app store - http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=294409923&mt=8
Now follow the same steps as before: select OK to be taken to Safari where you will add the icon to your home screen.  Then move it around to where you'd like it to live.  Move the original app off to another page.

You can use this method for the apps mentioned above.  I will say that using the mail & text message shortcut will open the app as a new message, but just hit cancel & you will be able to see your texts or your emails.  Now, if you want to replace something such as the calculator, camera, or notes apps you'll have to either deal with the fact that you can't - nor can you change the default camera - or download another app to replace it.  For this example we'll do the calculator.
There's no shortcut for the preinstalled calculator app, but you can find an icon you love, tap Set up Link, select App Search, and search Calculator.  There you will find a list of calculator apps you can replace.  If you don't have an app on your phone, CocoPPa lets you know you need to download it & takes you to the app store.

After you've downloaded the app, follow the same steps as before to set up your link & add to homepage.  You can do this with apps like weather, notes, & camera but it won't replace the preinstalled apps from Apple.  I kept some default icons.....just made it easier for me.

Other Features
Unfortunately you can't replace the default phone app either.  But you can create a shortcut to dial a particular person.  You can also create a short cut for email or text.  I think this is pretty cool to keep your fave contacts at your finger tips!

This feature is great to make a page of speed dials, text short cuts, or email short cuts.  You can find a bunch of miscellaneous icons - icons that don't correspond to anything.  I found pictures, shapes, flowers, hearts, bows, etc!  You can create a page with these shortcuts to specific contacts - text or call your mom, email your best friend, keep the take out place on speed dial.  Tapping these shortcuts will immediately call, open up a text, or open up a new email, to this contact.  Follow the same instructions to add this shortcut to your homescreen.

When you call someone, you're doing the same redirect.  I noticed that it redirects you to the CocoPPa app while the phone rings.  You need to tap return to call to end the call.

(Side note: I found my old phone while unpacking & boy do I miss the feel of buttons under my texting fingers!!  Never thought I'd say that!)

Helpful Hints
I don't advise creating an entire phone filled with swapped icons because your phone will begin to run slow & while reading up on CocoPPa I found people too many of these swaps caused crashes.  So do it in small doses.  Just do a few, maybe just speed dials for fun, or just a home page, etc.

Additionally, any notifications you get will not show up on the new icon meaning the notification badge won't show up.  All badges will appear on the original app.  Of course you can see your notifications when you tap the new icon because you'll be redirected to the app but you won't have a little red circle waiting for you reminding you.

Questions?
If you have a question, I'll try to answer....but I didn't make this app or the iPhone (I wish right?) so I don't know every answer.  Try Googling your question to see if someone figured it out, too.  The only way to change the native apps not listed above is to download new ones, sorry :(

Let me know if you do this! Show me your pretty phone!

Pantone Color of the Year Free Printable

I mentioned earlier that I've been working on expanding the Five Sixteenths Brand...this includes working on a STUDIO blog covering all things design related.  The first post went up yesterday with 5 tips on starting a blog of your own in the new year & the second post went up today.  Two posts, two days in a row probably won't be the norm over there, but I couldn't wait to share the awesome 2013 desktop, device backgrounds, & printable created in honor of the color of the year.

You can check out all the backgrounds here

The STUDIO blog will be updated probably once or twice a week with inspiration, freebies, blog tips, recommendations, etc.  I think it will be a lot of fun to have a second blog that doesn't need as much updating as this blog.  I'll also let you know when a new post is up from the STUDIO blog over here on Five Sixteenths.  You can also always find a link (as soon as I put it there!) in the side bar.

I have this background on all my devices & love looking at it.  Is it weird that I'd like for all my electronics to match? I don't even like using cords that don't match the color of the device.  For example, our PlayStation has a white cord charger for the controller.  Thankfully Zach found a black cord in his box of cables (it's like a tangled cord catastrophe in there!) to replace it.  I didn't even know it bothered me until I felt a bit more relaxed now that they match.  Maybe I'm just crazy!

Anyway, I hope you have a lovely Thursday.  I've already put a dent is some of the things I needed to get done today!

Hello March // Free Desktop Wallpaper

Hello Thursday & hello to March! I thoroughly enjoyed my Leap Day yesterday & spent the evening creating these wonderful desktop backgrounds for you.  If you haven't signed up for the Newsletter yet, I suggest clicking here & doing it because you'll get access to 2 other colors combos!  The Newsletter will be sent out around noon EST.  So hurry up!

(this is a jam packed Newsletter event, let me tell you!)

I don't know about you, but it takes way to long to get to my calendar on my iPhone. You have to click the button, swipe to unlock, locate your calendar (if your aren't on the first page or the app isn't on your dock), etc.  That is too damn long! Alright, it's not really that long...I just like having a calendar at my fingertips!  So here is a matching iPhone calendar that fits perfectly on your lock screen!

Also today starts 30 Days of Lists! I am so flipping excited! I can't wait to jot down some lovely lists.  I participated in the first go round but am so excited to get involved in this one.  Having another little book of lists is going to be awesome.

On another note, I haven't really shared this on the blog (because I don't know how to blog about it) but I am a resume queen.  Meaning that, while I don't consider myself an expert, I have a lot of experience with what employers are looking for when looking at your resume.  I know what will make you memorable & what will make you stand out.  I've been thinking about posting some of my resume tips but I've also been thinking about doing a little ebook of sorts on the matter.  Does anyone think this will be useful to them??

I wrote a workbook on resumes for when I teach my resume writing class where I work.  It's all about marketing yourself, highlighting your strengths, & tailoring a resume to suit the job your are applying for.   I'd love to re-do it for a creative sort of professional resume.  I really like resumes & job hunting (I don't really like the job working part!).

Are you ready for March? Do you have any goals for this month?

Freebie Time // iPhone Lurve

I love my iPhone...more than my pups & my boyfriend I think...maybe not, but it's still a lot.  I love all the things I can do with it & it really helps out with the whole blogging thing I am doing here.  I can take alright photos & make them cooler with filters, etc.  I can share them on really cool social media platforms (twitter & instagram).  I can check & respond to emails pretty quickly.  I can keep up with my tweeps too!

I lurve it! So I thought this February I'd share some lovely backgrounds for your valentine...you know, your phone. :) :) :)
