Achieve Vibrant Purple Hair at Home

I used to have a folder on my phone with images of purple hair pulled from Pinterest.  One day I found a box of deep purple dye at the drugstore (it was Vidal Sassoon London Lilac - which I'd still recommend) and dyed the under layer of my hair purple.  Once I fell in love with it, I then decided to make it official and headed to the salon.  I did that for while then I decided that I didn't really want to pay a zillion dollars to get my hair dyed each month, I tried to find a cheaper alternative.
The dye I used in the salon was Pravana, I'm pretty sure I used the color Wild Orchid on the bottom layer of my hair and then Violet on the top layer.  You can find Pravana online at places like Ebay and Amazon for about a drug store price.  However, if you don't like to wait, you can head to the actual drugstore and pick up Splat Hair Color.
I found Splat after going to Sally's only to find that the only bright colored hair dye was temporary.  Splat does make temporary color however the range of permanent hair dye colors is great.  I chose the color Lusty Lavender as I thought it would be something different than what I had, however the lavender color closely matched the Wild Orchid color from Pravana.  Eventually I decided to try out the other purple color, Purple Desire.  As of this post, my hair has a layer of Purple Desire on the top layer and then the rest of my hair is Lusty Lavender.

Each box comes with a bleach kit and the color.  If you have medium length or longer hair, you may need two boxes but at about $11.99 at Walgreens (where I buy mine), that's pretty affordable.  The cheapest I've found it was Target, but the shade range is limited.
This is my hair just with Lusty Lavender, you can see it's more pink than purple on bleached hair.  It looks nothing like the box and never did!  It also really sticks to well bleached areas, like my roots.

I would suggest getting a bowl and brush from Sally's as this will make for easier application.  Pick up a box of gloves as well!  The first go round I did not use a bowl and a brush.  I found that my hair did not bleach evenly because I ran out of bleach towards the end (I would recommend getting two boxes to start with if you're hair is shoulder length or longer!)  With good rationing and bowl + brush, I might have been able to make the bleach go through the length of my hair.  I also missed pieces when I was using the dye applicator provided with the box so I used a second box (just the dye) to touch up the places I missed.  The third time I dyed my hair, the bowl and brush helped tremendously.

I recently re-dyed my hair.  I started with the bleach first, just on the roots.  The bowl and the brush were very helpful here because I only needed a little bit of bleach to do all of my roots.  I sectioned my hair into very thin layers and went all the way around bleaching my roots, using a mirror to help me see the back when I needed.  When in doubt, I made the layer of hair very thin to make sure I didn't miss any parts.  Once this is rinsed out you'll need to dry your hair to apply the dye.  I usually do the bleach one night then the dye the next.
When I went in with the dye, I did the same thing - sectioned my hair into very thin layers and then started at the root and pulled the color through with the brush.  Instead of doing my roots first and then the rest of my head, I did each section all at once because it was easier for me.  To get the top layer a different shade of purple I first sectioned a U shape of hair from about my temples back.  Using a clip, I kept this section up an out of the way.  You don't have to have multiple bowls either - I rinsed my bowl & brush between applications and made sure to dry them.

This purple color will stain!! So to be careful I suggest getting all the bathroom rugs and other stuff out of the way.  Use an old towel over your sink and just take it slow.  You won't be a pro the first time you do this but you'll get better, promise.  The water in the shower will continue to run purple for quite a while - even up to the point the next month where you need to dye it again.  So be careful when you're hair is wet that you're not sleeping on the queens sheets!  Make sure you dry your body super well, too, because you don't want purple foot prints on the carpet down the hall.  I'm lucky that we use black towels!  Also don't put your towel on the floor or on something else while it's wet as the purple might leach onto the carpet, tile, pile of dirty clothes.  Wash these towels together too so your other clothes don't end up stained.
To keep my hair color lasting longer I try to shampoo it at most 3 times per week.  When I do shampoo I use the Redken Color Magnetics shampoo and then whatever conditioner I have on hand.  Splat also makes a small bottle of shampoo and conditioner to preserve color.

Overall, I am very impressed with this dye and have gotten many compliments on it.  I will continue to use this brand as I think it lasts long enough & the price is decent.  I highly recommend these kits to anyone who is looking to maintain fun colored hair, permanently, at an affordable price!

I hope this was helpful!  Do you have any fun hair coloring tips?

Beauty Review // Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Line

I've been wanting to get into doing reviews of products for a little while now.  It seems (as it should be) that will a little bit of income you're able to try different things so I've been able to try different beauty products lately & have really been loving it.  You can see my little dive into reviews & beauty related things on my YouTube channel here - but I'm bringing it to the blog as well & you can check out my favorite volumizing mascaras list here.  Anyway, I've been using this Moroccan Infusion line from Suave for a quite a while & have to say I'm in love!  I found a set of shampoo, conditioner, hair mask, & styling oil at Walgreens for $10.  I don't have the original packaging, but here's what they all look like.
I can't believe I love this line because for someone who has an oily scalp, shine is not really what I'm going for.  As a dedicated Pantene user I usually just go for shampoos that have the words Classic or Original in them.  This is the first time I've gone away from Pantene in a long, long time!   I have been interested in trying hair mask that hydrates because the ends of my hair are ridiculously damaged.  From the pulling from brushing & the breakage from tying my hair in a ponytail all the time my hair must hate me.  I've also been interested in seeing what this Moroccan Oil can really do.

This line claims that the products will give brilliant shine & long lasting conditioning benefits along with a luxurious fragrance.*  And I have to say they are right!  First the scent, especially of the shampoo is amazing.  I've never smelled any Moroccan oil type products before so I don't have anything to compare this too but it just smell so relaxing.  Luxurious is the right word for this ridiculously affordable shampoo.  (I just checked on Walmart's website & the 12fl oz shampoo is $2.88 & the 24 fl oz is $4.88 - what?!?!!?)

When I repurchase this - and I definitely will - I think I will opt for buying the hair mask instead of the conditioner.  I think in my New, Used, & Empties video from October I mentioned that I didn't really know if there was a difference between the conditioner & the hair mask.  After using each for a while I really prefer the hair mask since it's thicker.  It also seems to detangle better - when I throw my hair in a ponytail over the course of a day or two, there's no running a comb through it.  This line really keeps my hair feeling hydrated & less prone to tangling.
I think the key to the tangle-free result is using the styling oil both after shampooing & on dry hair.  Of course, I don't follow directions & put about 4-5 drops on my hand rather than 2-3.  I've noticed that when I used the styling oil when I'm wearing my hair straight I can run my fingers through my hair all day long.  There are no knots or tangles.  It's amazing.  The styling oil tames fly-aways & really keeps your damaged/broken/split ends looking healthy.  I even commented to Zach & made him feel how soft my hair was after using it the first time.

Since my scalp is oily I only use the styling oil & the conditioner/hair mask on the ends of my hair.  I usually put the conditioner or mask on before I was my face - I use my CVS brand cleansing power brush so I take my time cleansing my face.  I leave the conditioner/mask on for about a minute or two.  This process really made me realize that using the mask had more benefits to my hair than using the conditioner.

Overall I'm extremely impressed with this line.  I've been using the Shine Shampoo & Conditioner but the line also has a Color Care Shampoo & Conditioner.  I did just dye my hair though and haven't noticed that it stripped my color at all even just using the Shine Shampoo/Conditioner.  For the price of this line, you really can't beat it.  If you're looking to dive into some Moroccan Oil inspired hair products, I'd recommend these even if you have oily hair.  The only problem is I can't decide if I'm going to buy the items individually or see if I can snatch up another holiday box!

What hair care items or line have you been using & loving recently?

xoxo, Moe

Fun Beauty Must Haves for Spring (and Maybe Summer!)

I may have mentioned before that I do this thing where I get really into make up - nail polish, hair, lip stick, etc - and then all of a sudden I just don't give a crap any more.  Well I'm in one of my upswings where I can't believe I ever lived with out some of these beauty products.  Seriously...I'm in love with all of these products & really can't wait for the warm weather to stay so I can go out & show them off!  Maybe it's the cold but I do feel like I've been hibernating for the past few months but I also think that I was in a little slump right there at the end of my unemployment (I was struggling emotionally & had been offered a job I would have been ashamed to work, honestly.  Thankfully I pulled it together to find a job I'm proud of) - I just didn't care how I looked and that made me not really care about myself.  But now that the world is brighter here so are the colors in my life.  Here are some of my warm weather beauty must haves:

A fresh face!  I've mentioned before that I really love products that work together.  I got the Olay Fresh Effects Va-Va-Vivid cleansing system in the Sweet Heart Vox Box from Influenster & fell in love! Shine Free all day!  I just picked up the Statin Finish moisturizer but I'm not quite sure how I feel about it.  I included it because I do like it, it makes my face feel nice, but I think it might just not be right for me.  I'll keep using it though, maybe I'm just being weird.

To keep my face fresh, I usually pair my cleansing routine with Rimmel Fix & Perfect Primer25 hour foundation, & Stay Matte Pressed Powder but just recently I picked up Rimmel's BB cream in light & medium.  I picked up both shades because they were a BOGO deal at the drugstore and so I could blend them as I get sun on my face throughout the spring & summer.  I've heard all the hype about a BB cream, I still don't exactly know what it's all about but I like this one by Rimmel.  It has good coverage & blends well.  Since I have really uneven skin I tend to opt for a more full coverage foundation & really thought this would be on the tinted moisturizer side but it isn't!  So far my face feels great all through the day, no oiliness.  I usually don't wear blush...just add a little natural color to my face with some bronzer, nothing special.  I also tend to keep it natural by just throwing on some mascara, nothing special there either!

You already know about my obsession with the Maybeline Vivids collection but I turn to two colors most often: Shocking Coral (pictured) & Fuchsia Flash.  Lovely spring colors with out being too ridiculous for work!  I shy away from some of the colors because I'm just too shy to wear them.  But the whole collection sure looks great in my make up drawer!
I'm in love with my new flexible rod curlers!  They give more of a wave than a curl & I really like it!  This look is best on day two hair for me.  The first day looks too precise but second day & on it looks much more tousled and beach wavy.  But I still can't decide between curls & waves.  This past week I fell back on my good old foam curlers & fell in love again.  I think I'll keep switching it up here & there.

Colorful Nails & Soft Hands (Elbows, Knees, & Toes) are important for warm weather!  My mom always used this Neutrogena hand cream & now that we're coming out of winter it's the greatest formula for any left over dry skin from winter.  I also like to use this with my manicure sometimes.  Speaking of manicures I just found these awesome nail polishes at Meijer the other day!  They change colors in the sun!  And they aren't lame UV polishes either.....mint to an apple green & coral to a deeper red.  They look good both ways! Currently I'm wearing the mint Gypsy color but also have Sand Dune & Lilac not pictured.  As always, my favorite base & top coat from Icing is key to my manicures.  This base & top coat really seals my manicure & it doesn't chip all week!  I recently tried out a new base coat after seeing a pin on Pinterest but it totally chipped the same day I did my nails.  The whole nail color just peeled off.  Not cool.

I'm loving the warm weather & can't wait to make the most of the sun shine!

What are your warm weather beauty must haves?

xoxo, Moe

The Growth of my Hair // 08/11 to 09/12

So I am pretty sure the last time I had my hair cut short was right before Katie's wedding.  Then, since Katie & I are bffls, we started growing our hair out.  Zach likes long hair & I thought since I hadn't had long hair in a while it would be fun to grow it out.  Sort of a challenge I guess.  I didn't think I'd get very far, then I thought about having long flowing locks so I kept at it.  Then I saw Brave & was like 'how are they riding on horses with out their hair getting tangled?' Never mind that it was an animated movie & their hair is always perfect.

Once I started curling my hair I really liked it long.  Then as it grew & grew I realized I really like it a the length it is now.  I might even cut it a bit shorter because it will sit higher when it's curled.  When it's so long it's just so hot, gets in my face when I sleep & drive, and I sorta look like an egg head if it ins't fluffy.  Here in instagram photos is the progress of my hair (pardon the filters!):

December
I also grew facial hair
January, New Year's to be exact

I actually love this length

That's a lot of pictures isn't it....sheesh my hair has gotten long.  I don't think I'll let it grow much longer in fact I may get a hair cut here soon.

Isn't it weird how we change?

Hair Video + Styling Product Details

So the other day in my Guilty Pleasures post I mentioned my love of beauty & styling products.  I also mentioned that I am pretty brand specific when it comes to things like that.  What you may not know is that I just recently discovered the key to curly hair.  Recent purchases of mine include TRESemme's dry shampoo for fine/oily hair & a 3/4" barrel curling iron.

If you have about 12 minutes to spare, why don't go give a listen to me ramble on about my curly hair, a mini-review of the dry shampoo, and the products I use to style my hair.  Sorry, it's a long one & a bit of a ramble (also there is a weird glare on my face! whoops!):

Additionally here's a more detailed list of what I use, just in case you don't want to hear me ramble:
Wash & Style

All of these products I mentioned in the video, but if you don't want to listen to everything I thought I'd do a little recap down here:

Pantene Classic Clean Shampoo + Conditioner // I only wash my hair once a week since I've realized that dirty hair really holds a curl.  I'll put my shower cap on & get in the shower on days I don't wash my hair, but when I do I make sure to shampoo & condition it.  With all the heat, I am damaging my hair I am sure but the conditioner puts a lot of moisture back in to it.

TRESemme Dry Shampoo for Fine/Oily Hair // This I got at CVS for about 3 or 4 bucks.  It has mineral clay & citrus in it which makes it smell really good & absorb the oil.  I assume since the clay is in there it (one) absorbs oil in oily hair & (two) gives volume to fine hair since it's actually a substance in the spray - if that makes any sense.  There is also a dry hair, normal hair, etc option & I know that CVS has a generic brand too.  I use this on the days I don't wash my hair if I need it.  I've found that with styling my hair, I don't put my hands through it as much so it doesn't get that oily.

TRESemme 24 Hour Body Root Spray + Paul Mitchell Texturizing Sea Spray // These two go on to my head before I blow dry my hair.  The root boosting spray is really helpful to give my hair body even though I already have thick hair.  The texturizing spray give it a bit of texture (obviously) & dirties it back up a bit so it's easier to style.  I loved the sea spray when I had short, because it really made ,y hair look chunky & cool.  Now it really defines my layers if I where my hair straight.  I blow dry my hair upside down with a regular old hair dryer.

TRESemme Styling Gel + Hair Spray // I don't quite use the gel too much and am not quite sure why I actually included it in here, but the hairspray is what I love the most.  I use this to dirty my hair up a bit to hold the curl, to spray the curl when it is in the iron, & as a finishing spray to hold the curl all day.  I also have a baby hairspray in my purse for shots of it when I think it's about to fall.  It's like crack!

CONAIR Curling Iron // My curling iron I got for about 10 bucks at Target.  It is a 3/4" barrel curling iron & I think that size works really well for the length of my hair.  A one inch one would be too big.  I have a 1" curling iron & I tried it but it's only good for the top parts of the right side of my hair since that side is longer. It's not worth plugging both of them in.

So there you have.  A whole 45 minutes of mine in the morning is curling my Shirley Temple curls.

What products do you use? Have any other curl tips I should try?
ps. Stay tuned, this evening you'll meet the small sponsors for May!!

Fan Fridays // Back to Normal

Happy Friday all.  I went to pick up my lovely boyfriend from the airport last night & am glad to say he is in good shape.  He flew off for an interview in Michigan over the past week & I was very sad.  But I am glad to have him home safely & off to more interviews in VA.

This week has been mad at the office.  Trying to get things straight from the move, turn on the phones & internet, find all the folders for students, etc, etc.  On the blog front, I've also been organizing sponsor stuff for this month & the month of May.  I've updated my sponsor page here to include a new feature spot.  The feature spot will include a solo intro post with interview, option to guest post, & inclusion in the new Five Sixteenths Newsletter.  If you are interested in any sponsor spot, please shoot me an email!

Fan Friday today doesn't really have a theme as I've been inspired by a bazillion things this week.

This awesome monoprint fabric pillow with DIY from Design Mom.  I love the look of monoprints.  Sometimes I feel like it's an extra step, why not just paint (!?!?!), but the look is so much more unique.  When you paint (at least when I paint) I focus on the perfection of it all...if it's a monoprint it looks more worn & unique! I have to try this!

This totally super awesome ring display DIY from Tea Rose Home.  I've been dying to make something like this & keep finding awesome inspiration.  It's so lovely I have to make one.

Elycia's stinking cute hair cut right now.  I want to take this pic to my hair dresser & hope it looks good on me.  I am also in love with the collaborative vlogs with Elycia & Chantilly (of My Girl Thursday)

This super rad girl with super rad style in a super rad cardigan.  She blogs about absolutely amazing fashion & affordable finds on ebay.  I love those posts.  Makes my day every time.

This weeks manicure featuring a mint green by Sally Hansen & a lemon neon yellow from Icing.  I've been trying to be more experimental with my nail polish but sometimes it just comes out like crap.  For example, that half moon manicure worked once for me :( now all I get is a smooshed mess! What the heck!

Make it Mondays: The Higher The Hair

the funnier you look.  This Make it Monday I thought I'd show you what my mom helped me make when I went home on Sunday - a really coiffed hairdo.

Since my hair is growing out, I am looking for things to make it look less, well, lame.  This was really funny. I think I look like a total weirdo! But who knows, I might keep up with the curlers.....maybe I'll get some of those ones you sleep in...cuz I love curly hair!

Pay no attention to the ratty old tee shirt either!
Not every day is glamours, don't you know!

Put some gell in your hair & put the hot rollers in
(with the help of your mother, tee hee)

Take the rollers out......

Take some pictures of your 'do

Style your hair with some hair spray & a roll brush

Alright, this is how I looked:
(front facing cam is horrible!)

How I felt I looked:

I've also seen the great tutorial of curly hair with a stretchy headband.  My hair is not that long yet...but I fully plan to take advantage of that great tutorial!

Do you have any tips for a girl trying to grow her locks?
Send ideas please!

Fan Fridays: Tenured, Tartan, & Tempted

This week's Fan Friday post is a mix of some things I just stumbled upon today! I was going to include some things that I'd been pinning, etc...but when I headed over to Pinterest I got a screen saying they are making some changes! ahhh....no...I need to pin!

Anyway, while going through some blogs trying to catch up I found that one of The Dainty Squid's fave thing this Friday is Advanced Style.  A blog showing us that awesomeness advances with age!  I sat for a little while & looked through some of the posts.  I discovered that (1) I hope I grow more chic as I age & (2) that I really drew some inspiration from these folks!

I am also in love with going on picnics.  I often find myself day dreaming about going to the park with some friends, eating some yummy home made to-go foods, talking & taking in the sun.  It has been way too freaking hot to go do any of this! I sweat on my way to work, let's be honest! None the less I really want an adorable tartan picnic set!

via this etsy shop!

I also would settle for a small one for taking my lunch to work but I live only like 10 minutes away from my office.  I go home for lunch everyday!  We are looking to move our location though, so if I end up farther away I'll have to bring a home made lunch right?

I know I've mentioned this before, but I totally want a wig! I am totally inspired by bloggers I see that rock it & I really need something to cover up this mess (my hair) as it grows out.  I really want a blonde one too! I am obsessed with blond hair.  When I dye mine you can guarantee it will be bleach blonde!  Though I do like a honey gold color....hmmmmmm..... I am also trying NOT TO CUT MY HAIR!! My room mate recently cut her hair & I was like 'I wanna cut mine!' but I'd like to have long hair for a little while.  I just have to wait & I hate waiting.  That's what the wig is for right?!!?!

Here is some of my hair-spiration:

Half of my hair-spiration pin board is short hair & the other half is long.  That is what the wig is for right? Long hair? Take it off & shore hair is where it's at? ahhh!

What are you loving this week?
Have you popped by Est. 1839 yet? Amy did a great menswear DIY
(super, super easy!)

Have a great weekend!!

Tempted Tuesday: Hair-spiration

I am still torn between getting a hair cut
and not getting a hair cut

So far I haven't gotten a cut...but my hair looks a mess!

To Cut:

or Not to Cut:

I want to grow my hair out....but I also want to keep it short because I love it short!
It would take so long to grow out my hair.

Opinions??
