Beauty Review // Shea Moisture 10 in 1 Renewal System Hair Masque

A bit ago I did a little review on the Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque, and today I'd like to share with you a drugstore version.  This is the Shea Moisture SuperFruit Masque I found at Target one evening.  I've been using it for a bit and want to share with you my thoughts on this hair mask and compare it to the Macadamia Oil one.

The full name, if you want to know, is Shea Moisture SuperFruit Complex 10-in-1 Renewal System w/ Marula Oil and Biotin Hair Masque!

The bottle claims it will age-defy, color protect, hydrate, nourish, soften, anti-stress, deep condition, revive body, strengthen, and add shine.

First Impressions & Application

This product comes in a tub with a screw off lid.  First off, because of the shape of the container - the bottom isn't rounded like the Macadamia Natural Oil masque - you are able to hold it easier in the shower.  You can twist on and off the cap with ease...so I noticed that first since I had a time with the Macadamia Natural Oil packaging!  The texture of this hair mask is very similar to the Macadamia one.  It is quite thick yet easy to spread.  I use about the same amount as the Macadamia product - scoop some out on my finger tips and apply it to my hair then close the cap.

The product is easy enough to distribute through out the hair.  I use my fingers but the website suggests using a wide tooth comb, I believe either would work as long as you make sure to distribute it evenly.  The Shea Moisture SuperFruit masque doesn't feel as slippery as the Macadamia Natural Oil masque but it the consistency did remind me of mayonnaise as well.  The scent is weird, but fruity.  It's not my favorite scent but I did get used to it.  

Wear Time

Once my hair dried after the first application I was impressed with how smooth my hair felt.  I remember after the first application of the Macadamia Natural Oil masque I wasn't too impressed.  My hair felt smooth and not as coarse (I wouldn't consider my hair coarse to begin with, so that is how smooth it felt).  With the Shea Moisture SuperFruit masque, my hair did feel instantly renewed......... like the Macadamia Oil masque claimed.

I tried using this instead of my regular conditioner (like I did with the Macadamia Natural Oil masque) but found it to be too heavy on my hair.  After a few days of constant use, my hair felt oily and weighed down.  I went to using it every other day, and then every few days, and I think that every few days is the best way to use this.  I still use my every day conditioner from the Suave Moroccan Oil line on the days I'm not using the Shea Moisture SuperFruit masque.  I've also found that if I put this masque about .5 inches from my scalp, I get better results.  My hair isn't as oily at the root that way.

Overall Impressions & Recommendations

I have to say for the price compared to the Macadamia Natural Oil masque - the Shea Moisture SuperFruit masque is the better value.  On the Ulta website it is listed as $12.99, on Amazon it is a little over $13, but I think I got this at Target for around $10 (maybe).  I do love how my hair feels after I use it.  I feel that my hair is being renewed and hydrated much more than with my everyday conditioner and more that the Macadamia Natural Oil masque.  The 12 oz size of the Shea Moisture SuperFruit masque is nearly half the price of the 8.5 oz size of the Macadamia Natural Oil masque and I didn't use it nearly as fast (you can see there is still product in the tub!)

I have to say I will repurchase this hair treatment and continue to use it as I continue to dye my hair!

Beauty Review // Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque

Since I've been bleaching and dying my hair (click here for how I achieve vibrant purple hair at home!) my hair has become super, super damaged.  It wasn't until recently that I realized that my hair was feeling a bit like straw.  I think part of that was the heat I used on it while in Korea.  I curled my hair using my curling iron instead of my curlformers.  It was much easier to get up in the morning and curl my hair than stick in my curlers at night!  Anyway, as soon as I got back I used the Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque and I thought I'd do a review for you.

When I'd originally planned to do this review, I'd only been using the product for a week.  I was so keene on doing a review because I wasn't impressed with the product.  I wanted to do a review to hastily because of the hype this product gets and because of the claims on the back of the container.  I've since changed my drastic opinion and wanted to do a more solid review of the product.  

Anyway, let's just get into the review.

First Impression & Application

When I first used this in the shower I was impressed with the thickness of the product, which made it hard to get out of the container.  Because of the tub the product is in, it was harder to get the product dispensed and the cap back on the product so none of the shower water would get into the product.  

Scooping it out was easy enough, there was a lot of product in the container. But because of the slippery nature of the product it was hard to twist the cap back on easily.  The consistency of this product reminds me of mayonnaise - the texture was thick, yet smooth and felt very slippery.

Like I said the product was very thick but I was able to easily distribute it through my whole head. The directions say to liberally comb through clean wet hair and let sit for at least 7 minutes - so I washed my hair first in the shower then put the Deep Repair Masque and did the rest of my routine.

Wear Time
This is a weird little section since this isn't something I can really test the longevity of like a foundation but I still wanted to include this section as a what I thought through the time I was using the product:

Eventually I started by scooping out a hefty handful and putting it on top of my head in a big glob and then closing the container. I never had any difficulty distributing the product through my hair. After the first time I used it, I wasn't impressed with the results. I didn't think my hair's texture was instantly renewed. I decided to use it the next night just the same - the container does say to use it twice a week for best results - and I still felt unimpressed. For the entire time I've been using this deep repair masque I've been using it in place of my conditioner and I have to say I see average results.

As you can see in the images I've used up about all I can from the bottle.  I washed my hair about 3 or 4 times a week each time using this as my conditioner.  I do have to say I've seen improvements in my hair's textured but I do not think that the texture of my hair has been renewed.  I know I'm using this in a specific manner that maybe it wasn't intended for - dry, damaged, over processed hair - but maybe my hair is the best hair to see what the masque really can do?

Overall Impressions & Recommendations

Overall, I think this product is a decent, daily deep conditioner if you need it.  It does a decent job at conditioning and smoothing the hair, I'm not sure the damage I've done is repaired but my hair feels a bit more like hair and less like straw.  However, the price is what is crazy for an everyday conditioner - regular retail for this product is $36, I got mine for $19.99 at TJ Maxx.  

If you're looking for an affordable deep conditioner to use everyday my favorite is the Suave Morracan Oil line.  I plan on picking up more of that line once I run out of this and of every other condditioner I own (!!!).  In addition to the Deep Repair Masque, I have been using the Suave Morracan Hair OIl and that combo has really impressed me with returning my hair texture.

At the end of the day, I would say that I would buy this product again, but not at it's retail price.  I do think the results are comparable to the Suave Morrocan Oil deep conditioner but I like the thickness and the texture better.  So even though this isn't a stellar review, this product acceptable at most - in my opinion..

If we were at a store I wouldn't tell you not to get it....you know what I mean??

Achieve Vibrant Purple Hair at Home

I used to have a folder on my phone with images of purple hair pulled from Pinterest.  One day I found a box of deep purple dye at the drugstore (it was Vidal Sassoon London Lilac - which I'd still recommend) and dyed the under layer of my hair purple.  Once I fell in love with it, I then decided to make it official and headed to the salon.  I did that for while then I decided that I didn't really want to pay a zillion dollars to get my hair dyed each month, I tried to find a cheaper alternative.  

The dye I used in the salon was Pravana, I'm pretty sure I used the color Wild Orchid on the bottom layer of my hair and then Violet on the top layer.  You can find Pravana online at places like Ebay and Amazon for about a drug store price.  However, if you don't like to wait, you can head to the actual drugstore and pick up Splat Hair Color.

I found Splat after going to Sally's only to find that the only bright colored hair dye was temporary.  Splat does make temporary color however the range of permanent hair dye colors is great.  I chose the color Lusty Lavender as I thought it would be something different than what I had, however the lavender color closely matched the Wild Orchid color from Pravana.  Eventually I decided to try out the other purple color, Purple Desire.  As of this post, my hair has a layer of Purple Desire on the top layer and then the rest of my hair is Lusty Lavender.

Each box comes with a bleach kit and the color.  If you have medium length or longer hair, you may need two boxes but at about $11.99 at Walgreens (where I buy mine), that's pretty affordable.  The cheapest I've found it was Target, but the shade range is limited.

This is my hair just with Lusty Lavender, you can see it's more pink than purple on bleached hair.  It looks nothing like the box and never did!  It also really sticks to well bleached areas, like my roots.

I would suggest getting a bowl and brush from Sally's as this will make for easier application.  Pick up a box of gloves as well!  The first go round I did not use a bowl and a brush.  I found that my hair did not bleach evenly because I ran out of bleach towards the end (I would recommend getting two boxes to start with if you're hair is shoulder length or longer!)  With good rationing and bowl + brush, I might have been able to make the bleach go through the length of my hair.  I also missed pieces when I was using the dye applicator provided with the box so I used a second box (just the dye) to touch up the places I missed.  The third time I dyed my hair, the bowl and brush helped tremendously.

I recently re-dyed my hair.  I started with the bleach first, just on the roots.  The bowl and the brush were very helpful here because I only needed a little bit of bleach to do all of my roots.  I sectioned my hair into very thin layers and went all the way around bleaching my roots, using a mirror to help me see the back when I needed.  When in doubt, I made the layer of hair very thin to make sure I didn't miss any parts.  Once this is rinsed out you'll need to dry your hair to apply the dye.  I usually do the bleach one night then the dye the next.

When I went in with the dye, I did the same thing - sectioned my hair into very thin layers and then started at the root and pulled the color through with the brush.  Instead of doing my roots first and then the rest of my head, I did each section all at once because it was easier for me.  To get the top layer a different shade of purple I first sectioned a U shape of hair from about my temples back.  Using a clip, I kept this section up an out of the way.  You don't have to have multiple bowls either - I rinsed my bowl & brush between applications and made sure to dry them.

This purple color will stain!! So to be careful I suggest getting all the bathroom rugs and other stuff out of the way.  Use an old towel over your sink and just take it slow.  You won't be a pro the first time you do this but you'll get better, promise.  The water in the shower will continue to run purple for quite a while - even up to the point the next month where you need to dye it again.  So be careful when you're hair is wet that you're not sleeping on the queens sheets!  Make sure you dry your body super well, too, because you don't want purple foot prints on the carpet down the hall.  I'm lucky that we use black towels!  Also don't put your towel on the floor or on something else while it's wet as the purple might leach onto the carpet, tile, pile of dirty clothes.  Wash these towels together too so your other clothes don't end up stained.

To keep my hair color lasting longer I try to shampoo it at most 3 times per week.  When I do shampoo I use the Redken Color Magnetics shampoo and then whatever conditioner I have on hand.  Splat also makes a small bottle of shampoo and conditioner to preserve color.

Overall, I am very impressed with this dye and have gotten many compliments on it.  I will continue to use this brand as I think it lasts long enough & the price is decent.  I highly recommend these kits to anyone who is looking to maintain fun colored hair, permanently, at an affordable price!

Beauty Review // Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Line

I've been wanting to get into doing reviews of products for a little while now.  It seems (as it should be) that will a little bit of income you're able to try different things so I've been able to try different beauty products lately & have really been loving it.  You can see my little dive into reviews & beauty related things on my YouTube channel here - but I'm bringing it to the blog as well & you can check out my favorite volumizing mascaras list here.  Anyway, I've been using this Moroccan Infusion line from Suave for a quite a while & have to say I'm in love!  I found a set of shampoo, conditioner, hair mask, & styling oil at Walgreens for $10.  I don't have the original packaging, but here's what they all look like.

I can't believe I love this line because for someone who has an oily scalp, shine is not really what I'm going for.  As a dedicated Pantene user I usually just go for shampoos that have the words Classic or Original in them.  This is the first time I've gone away from Pantene in a long, long time!   I have been interested in trying hair mask that hydrates because the ends of my hair are ridiculously damaged.  From the pulling from brushing & the breakage from tying my hair in a ponytail all the time my hair must hate me.  I've also been interested in seeing what this Moroccan Oil can really do. 

This line claims that the products will give brilliant shine & long lasting conditioning benefits along with a luxurious fragrance.*  And I have to say they are right!  First the scent, especially of the shampoo is amazing.  I've never smelled any Moroccan oil type products before so I don't have anything to compare this too but it just smell so relaxing.  Luxurious is the right word for this ridiculously affordable shampoo.  (I just checked on Walmart's website & the 12fl oz shampoo is $2.88 & the 24 fl oz is $4.88 - what?!?!!?)

When I repurchase this - and I definitely will - I think I will opt for buying the hair mask instead of the conditioner.  I think in my New, Used, & Empties video from October I mentioned that I didn't really know if there was a difference between the conditioner & the hair mask.  After using each for a while I really prefer the hair mask since it's thicker.  It also seems to detangle better - when I throw my hair in a ponytail over the course of a day or two, there's no running a comb through it.  This line really keeps my hair feeling hydrated & less prone to tangling.

I think the key to the tangle-free result is using the styling oil both after shampooing & on dry hair.  Of course, I don't follow directions & put about 4-5 drops on my hand rather than 2-3.  I've noticed that when I used the styling oil when I'm wearing my hair straight I can run my fingers through my hair all day long.  There are no knots or tangles.  It's amazing.  The styling oil tames fly-aways & really keeps your damaged/broken/split ends looking healthy.  I even commented to Zach & made him feel how soft my hair was after using it the first time.  

Since my scalp is oily I only use the styling oil & the conditioner/hair mask on the ends of my hair.  I usually put the conditioner or mask on before I was my face - I use my CVS brand cleansing power brush so I take my time cleansing my face.  I leave the conditioner/mask on for about a minute or two.  This process really made me realize that using the mask had more benefits to my hair than using the conditioner.

Overall I'm extremely impressed with this line.  I've been using the Shine Shampoo & Conditioner but the line also has a Color Care Shampoo & Conditioner.  I did just dye my hair though and haven't noticed that it stripped my color at all even just using the Shine Shampoo/Conditioner.  For the price of this line, you really can't beat it.  If you're looking to dive into some Moroccan Oil inspired hair products, I'd recommend these even if you have oily hair.  The only problem is I can't decide if I'm going to buy the items individually or see if I can snatch up another holiday box!
