Wednesday Decor // 3 Home Projects I Hope to Try

Back in February I posted my Home Organization plan for 2014 - well I kind stayed on top of it!  Yay for the word focus for this year, right?  Since I've been on an organizing kick lately I decided to add a few more things to the list of home stuff I want to complete this year.  Maybe this is part two of the organization plan...who knows!

Fridge Mat / Organization
From what I read from this post on I Heart Organizing, these are actual Fridge Coaster brand fridge coasters....redundant much?  But I've also seen using placemats as fridge coasters & since I found 12 bright yellow chevron placemats at Meijer for $0.50 each, I think I'm going to use those!  How fun would it be to have a gussied up fridge?  Weird but awesome right?

Laundry Room Baskets / Organization
Just like this little laundry area, our laundry closet has wire shelving and is just a plain mess.  Hopefully in the next renovation my laundry room dreams come true.  What, you don't have laundry room dreams?  I've been searching everywhere for wire baskets that weren't $16 a pop and finally found $5 baskets from Dollar General.  They were bright colors so I got some Rustoleum Metallic spray paint & had at it.  I can't wait to get the laundry closet all organized.

Bill / Finance / Etc Command Station
If there's one thing that is the biggest annoyance in my life - it's how I have the bills organized.  Pretty much when mail comes in the door I stand between our two desks and divide it up.  I get my stuff & Zach gets his stuff and bills.  So that means it gets misplaced or covered up and I forget when they are due.  The image above is from this post & that blog is where I got inspiration for my bills tracker in my planner.  The one provided in the post was 8.5x11 and I needed 8.5x5.5 for my half sized planner.  But I really want to get a central place for bills and our past bills because those are upstairs when bills are paid downstairs!

So here's to another 4 months of organizing!

What do you want to accomplish in your home during the rest of the year?

xoxo, Moe

I've been playing around with the app Wtrite365 from an awesome blogger Kam of Campfire Chic.  One of the prompts was 'DIY projects to try'.  So I skimmed my Pins to see exactly what I could do to stay on track with my Home Organization Plan this year.

Wednesday Decor // Home Organization Plan for 2014

What is up 2014?  I'm taking total control of you lately!  I know it's only the 2nd month of the year - which means I'm sure to burn out on my new year momentum soon.  So far I think I've been owning 2014 with my Three Great Things project as well as setting my Four Simple Goals each month (and sort of sticking to them!).  But I want to focus on a greater theme this year which is Organization.  Since focus is my word for this year I want to take time to actually make a plan of attack instead of just say 'I want to do this _________'.  Planning will help me focus on what needs to be done in order to complete the task!  There are several home related organization things I want to tackle this year & here they are:
Clean out the closets
This goes for the bedroom & the guest closets.  They have both become catch alls for everything under the sun.  Clothes need to get donated & things just need to get moved around.  I need something to organize my shoes (oh god, my shoes!) & just plain need to get rid of clothes.  This was part of the February goals - but I think it's getting pushed back unless it stops snowing.  I also want to add mirrored doors to the bedroom closet to make it look bigger!

Kitchen Organization - Under the Sink
Um, under the sink is a plastic bag graveyard & also some dish soap, etc.  Pretty much it's not a fun place to look & I know I'm not using it very well.  I am pretty sure I don't know half of whats under there.  Yikes!  What needs to live under there are sponges & cleaning supplies, and maybe some plastic bags.  We have a lot of shelves under there but nothing is being utilized properly.

Kitchen Organization - Cabinets
One thing I looooove about this house is the amount of cabinet space we have.  It's unreal.  I also love that because of all these cabinets we have so much counter space!  There are quite a few cabinets that just have random junk in them.  I need to make better use of the space we have.  We also have a little cart that is becoming a catch all - I don't know how many times a week I clean junk off of the top of it!  I also want to designate some of this cabinet space for Zach to organize some of his paperwork & our paperwork for the house.

The Garage
Oh, god the garage.  So this was supposed to be a January goal but it was way too cold to pull out all the junk & organize it.  This is going to be something for the spring.  Oh god, we need to get the garage under control.  Seriously, I don't even like to look in there!  We need to create space for both of us to work - it's already designated, just covered in random things.

Under the Bathroom Sink
Both the upstairs bathroom & the guest bathroom sink storage need to be organized like woah.  Again, I just shove any bathroom related items in the cabinets & shut the door.  Out of sight out of mind - until I need more shampoo.  I've seen at Dollar Store & Big Lots little stackable bins - the remind me of kindergarten classrooms but they look so helpful!

I've gotten a lot organized so far though.  The living room has a pretty good organization thing going on:  baskets under the shelves for board games, candles, game systems, and wires, the coffee table drawers just got organized, there's a basket under the coffee table for a blanket, heating pad, & laptop storage, and a coat rack & storage box by the side door.  Our bedroom is also pretty much organized, though there's always room for improvement in there & I always organize my make up at the end of the week.  The office area is pretty organized, too.

My plan is to incorporate these into my Four Simple Goals for each month & tackle one a weekend since a lot of it is going to be purchasing organization stuff for our house.  I'm also keeping this list pretty low (& full of the big things that need to get done) because completing a lot of things is not something I'm great at.  So with a smaller list I'm pretty sure I'll get through all of it!

What is one of your greater goals this year?  Have you been tackling it like you own 2014?

xoxo, Moe

Wednesday Decor // Planning for Planting

Is it too early to be talking about planting?  Perhaps, since there's about a foot of snow on the ground when I'm writing this.  (I'm writing this post in advance but I'm 90% sure there will snow from here until September.  What the actual hell?)  I can't help it.  I'm dreaming of warmer weather while I snuggle under the heated blanket.

Last year I tried very hard to plant flowers & herbs and keep them up.  But after I was done I hated what I'd done outside & somehow the herbs all died.  Well it's a new year & I get a new try as soon as the weather warms up.  I've been pinning a lot of inspiration lately because I really want to give it a hard try - I love the look of greenery & I want to have it both inside and out.  We've got two big windows at the front of our house & I sit in front of one at my desk so putting some greenery in there would really make the most of these windows!  Here's some of my inspiration:
This tutorial form All Things Heart & Home really has me inspired to spruce up plain, terra cotta pots instead of spending zillions on fancy pots.  I think this is going to be my go to pot style of choice I think.
I like that tutorial above because I really want to make this Herb Tower (found on Martha Stewart) for our deck of the kitchen.  I think it would be great to step outside, grab some herbs, & keep on cooking!
And I love the look of these aged pots in this post!  Good thing I found a way to spruce up plain ones right?  I'm hoping I can find affordable ones to age so I can have an arrangement like this around an entry way.  I'm thinking about doing something near our side door with pedestals so there can be some varying heights with the varying plants.
This is what I'd like the front of our garden to look like.  Currently we have a big space for planting & it has four large hostas in it.  But at the front is like a little sub-planting area & I want to add a bunch of plants that will over spill from the box to give fullness.  I need a gardener.
I also just want plants everywhere in the house.  I'm much better at taking care of those, even though I still suck at it!  Sorry plants!  I love the random assortment of things going on here & am thinking about adding all the plants I can find to the windowsill above my desk!

What are you planning for the warmer weather?

xoxo, Moe

Wednesday Decor // Our Total Basement Redo

You probably know if you've been reading this blog for a while that we undertook a total basement redo when we moved into the house.  I've shared it here before, but for Homevember I thought I would corral all the pictures into one big post for posterity.  When we moved in, the first floor of our house - sort of like a basement if you will, was a two bay garage with a bedroom.  Now we have a smaller garage & great big living room/office area!
Here's what our idea was when we first started talking about it.  It's changes a whole lot!  For reference, the long part in the front with the lving room & work area was the first long bay of the garage.  The dotted line at the top of the living room area was open - no wall - and went into the second smaller bay of the garage.  I don't think I have pictures of this part but we tore out a huge closet that was to the left of the stairs where that door is crossed out there by the desk.  Here's what the downstairs looks like now:
As you can see a lot has changed!  We put up 5 walls - one to divide the garage from the living area, one to replace the garage door at the end of the living area, moved the one in the spare room to make the bathroom, utility closet, & closet bigger, and walls to separate those!  Here are some in progress photos:
I don't think I have the original image before I added the text for this post
So here's what separated the bays of the garage.  We put the wall there.
Above is the wall that had a closet on it.  We ripped out the closet to give more space & we ripped out another doorway by the closet into the garage so the space would be open.
Below starts a peak at the spare bedroom & the bathroom/closet/utility room.  We split up the long bathroom into utility room that was there before in order to give the bedroom a closet.  I believe in order to be considered a bedroom it had to have a closet - so we made the tiniest closet on the face of the earth!
Those are all the in progress pictures of the spare bedroom! We're still not totally done with the spare bedroom so no photos this Homevember go round - but keep a look out next year as we keep on updating!

Also, next week will be pictures of out Living Room & how it's styled etc.  Then the week after will be pictures of the office area.  It's not totally done yet either - we've got some adding & styling to do but you can get a peak at it!

This basement redo was exhausting & fun and I'm so glad we have more room in the house now.  I would have felt like I was living in an apartment if we'd just kept the upstairs.

xoxo, Moe

Wednesday Decor // Choosing Wall Art - a post from Entanglements

Turning a room in your home from generic to intimate is easier than you think with a beautiful piece of wall art. Decorating a blank wall transforms a space instantly. Walls actually can talk if you give them the chance. The challenge is getting the perfect piece that fits your space. The aesthetic potential of art is infinite, so when thinking about a wall hanging in your home the possibilities are endless. Because of this, you must follow your instincts and your intuitions. Remember, you will live with the art in your home for a long period of time. It has to be perfect, and perfectly reflect you. You can begin by choosing the colour, as colour is part of our primary sense of perception. You can choose your colour according to what will blend with the existing colours and features in your room, or you can ignore that choose a piece that will carve its very own visual pathway out in your home. There is nothing wrong with unexpected colours in your artwork. Have a look at this exemplary outdoor piece that reflects and complements the blue water of the pool:

Remember, the only rule is that there are no steadfast rules. That said, size and scale always have their different effects on a space. Large shapes make bold, determined statements. Pieces of a smaller scale, meanwhile, give a delicate and compartmentalised impressions. If you like small pieces, look into purchasing a series of matching pieces that will hang next to each other or in different parts of a space, meaning that they link the room by a common thread. For example, these creative planter boxes:

You can use shape as a theme as well. Contrast straight lines with curved lines and vice versa, like these round wooden plates:

Whatever you choose, just make sure you love it. If you haven't yet found something that you like, don't worry. You can always commission the perfect piece. Browse wall art and commissions at Entanglements.

This post was sponsored by Entanglements, an Australian based studio focused on outdoor metal wall art & decor.  Thank you for supporting the brands that support Five Sixteenths!

Wednesday Decor // Making a Happy Home

Guess what? We've finally gotten the downstairs nearly done! Drywall is up, primed, and the first coat of paint is going to go on here shortly.  Hooray! Flooring is on its way (carpet, laminate, & some vinyl for the entry ways).  It's so close I can almost feel it!

If you haven't heard, the downstairs of our little house is going to be our office/living space divided by a bookcase since the room is so long.  (You can get a better idea of the downstairs here.)  We enclosed one bay of the two bay garage under our house and then worked on turning a spare room into a spare bedroom with attached bath & closet.  It's all going to look real nice down there when we're through!

Today I wanted to share with you our color choices & the key parts that make our house a happy one:
FLOORING
In about 3 minutes flat Zach & I decided on the flooring, which is surprising because usually it takes a lot of convincing & compromise to agree on decor.  We decided that to break up the room beyond just having a large ass bookshelf, we'd have laminate flooring in the office & carpet in the living area.

When we decided on that, I mentioned I'd really like to have wider planks in the laminate flooring.  I liked more of a reclaimed look rather than the traditional hardwood look that I knew growing up at my parents' house.  When we went preliminary looking (meaning we were already in the hardware store so we said 'hey let's look') we couldn't find anything we agreed on.  A lot of the wider planked laminate had a distressed look to the finish, something that Zach doesn't like.  So I though we were doomed to have boring looking laminate.  As for carpet, all we knew was that we didn't want something in a bright/bold color or any color at all.  We wanted something neutral & speckled.

One Saturday afternoon, Zach came home with a bunch of flooring samples from an independent flooring place.  He said immediately "I like this Walnut one & this carpet named Rice Paper."  I said, "Yeah, I like those too." Since it was too good to be true that we agreed on something, we talked about it for a while, said what we liked & didn't like about each flooring option, then came back to the first combination.  I think it was a miracle.  We found an awesome compromise on the wider plank-no distressed marks problem & found an awesome, fully, neutral, speckled carpet.

As for paint, I don't have time to play around with color combinations, then put paint on the wall, turn around & hate it.  So, just like the upstairs of our house, we're going with some type of white.  I don't really like the white upstairs, it's got too much yellow....so we're gonna do more white white.  I hope that makes sense.

COZY ACCENTS
As for the cozy accents, I am very firm on the use of my bright red pillows I purchased with like the first 40 dollars I made at my crappy second job at a home decor store (you think I would have loved working there right? No, no I didn't).  I think they are awesome, they are squishy, & they are soft.  Of course there will be plenty of crocheted throws, once we get it all set up I'll decide on a color.  Perhaps a nice beige or if we do pale teal/blue accents, maybe something along those lines.

Of course, since we have this giant bookcase we're both excited about, Zach's book collection will be on display.  He has so many books on so many topics, a great start to a library.  While my book collection consists of the Harry Potter series, assorted craft & business books (my faves there in the side bar from Amazon!), sketchbooks, art history books, & a few french books...it's nothing compared to his.

Other accents on side tables will be timed flameless candles.  I love them because you don't have to light any candles or go around & turn any flameless candles on.  Timed ones come on at a certain time then stay on for anywhere from 4 to 6 hours.  Meijer has a set of 3 or so that are only $16!  They were rather expensive at Bed, Bath, & Beyond.  Under the coffee table will be baskets to hold various things: remotes, controllers, magazines, etc.

So there you have it, just a long winded peek into what's been happening on the design side of things now that the drywall is up.  If you want to see the rough design idea for our living room, check out this post where you'll see the first mock up drawing we did when we were miles a part.

Have you done any redecorating?  Looking to install any new home elements in the new year? I'd love to know!

Wednesday Decor // Style Vintage Books

Usually any decor posts on Wednesday are named Dorm Dec Wednesday...but since I've graduated & we're moving on up, I thought I'd change the name.  Though we are currently living in a teeeny tiny one bedroom apartment, I am no longer decorating a dorm room & thought up a more grown up title for the the Wednesday decor inspiration: Wednesday Decor.  I think it's a welcomed change & if you pick up a copy of the Blogging Basics eBook that's now out, I talk about how change can be good for you in blogging.  Since life has this tendency to just happen you'll go through change & it's alright if your blog does to!  Blogging is about discovering yourself rather than talking about yourself anyway!

This past weekend Zach & I went home decor shopping.  We went because it was a 3 day weekend & we didn't have much to and because we hardly agree on anything decor related (I've mentioned how we've used pinterest to solve this before)!  We decided it would be good for us to go somewhere that we could pick up & move objects to see what we liked best.  It turned out to be a fun trip where we decided on bedding (yay! + a DIY coming soon!) and bedframe styles.  My favorite stop was when we decided to take a look around Ethan Allen.  I fell in love with how they styled their store!  There was an especially large bookcase filled with different book collections (the first picture below) which got me thinking of all the ways to use books in your home decor with out having them sitting neatly in a row on a book case.  It's much more interesting to have them all around you, unless your into neat rows of books!

Zach & I are always on the hunt for interesting books.  I love bright colors & shapes and Zach looks for interesting topics & sets.  Together we are a great pair of book hunters!

two // three // four
(if you could help with the exact sources, I'd love it! Some of these were found on pinterest pinned months ago!)
4 Ways to Incorporate Vintage Books into your Home Decor:

Mix & Match Collections in a Book Case //  This is perfect if you have a huge book case but not a huge book collection (yet).  Display your books in piles by color, size, genre, author, & mix in other display elements like knick knacks, book ends, sculptures, & even photos.  Create zones and display all nautical related books with shells & family beach photos, for example.  Create an ombre or rainbow effect by displaying books by color.

Unique Photo Display //  Sometimes we find books that are a little worse for wear but the insides & the covers are in an awesome distressed condition that would make them perfect to repurpose.  We can't stand to do it, but using the book bones to make a great photo display can add to your inspiration space in your studio, create a cool entry way display, & add a bit of interest to any room.  Consider using all one color, all one genre, all one topic, etc for a cohesive look.

Display a Curated Collection // Displaying a carefully assmebled collection can say a lot about a room's decor & your interests.  In the 516VINTAGE shop, we curate our book collections currently by subject matter.  Curating a collection by more than color creates depth to a room & allows your true interests to shine through your decor.  Consider our collection of children's study books as decor to a nursery or child's room.  A collection of late 19th & early 20th century American History School books is perfect for a history buff's office

Elevate a Lamp for Better Lighting //  When I was in college a lot of my apartments didn't have overhead lighting.  I am a lighting snob: I have to have all the available lights in the room on or else I can't see squat!  I used to elevate my bedside lamp & my desk lamp on books in order to gain more lighting.  Not only is this functional but its pretty too!

Books have to be one of our favorite things to collect.  Zach can't stand to see a good book let go & I love thinking of all the hands that once touched them & all the minds that ones enjoyed them.  It's great to be able to connect with others & use books to bring a bit of warmth into your home.  Check out the 516VINTAGE instant book collections (expanding oh so soon!) because a house filled with books is a good place to live!

How do you use books in your home? Are they purely practical or do you mix it up?

Fan Friday #69 // In a Crochet Daze

First I wanna say that I was caught red handed yesterday trying to suggest a neutral color palette in our bedroom to Zach.  As soon as I started saying something about it he said 'why, so you can put pink everywhere?'  Immediately I knew he'd read yesterday's post.  Can't get anything past that guy!! :)

If there is one thing I've learned about myself after being alive 24 years, its that I can't sit still.  I always have to be making something.  Since I've been back in Michigan, I've been crocheting away like the good old days.  Keeping my hands busy is something I have to do.  Ever since I was little I always had to be making something...it just kept my mind & my hands occupied.  I can't just sit & watch TV, I can hardly sit still enough to read a book, I have to be making.  So now that I have my hook in hand again I've been thinking about tackling some bigger projects: blankets & throws.  Not only do I want some nifty ones for our new home (back to the bedroom color palette!) but I also want to make some for the shop.  I've been loving just making & making & making....

one two three four

modern patchwork - Making a zillion tiny granny squares is something I like to do to use up scrap yarn.  Since I also get bored if I use one color for too long, switching it up always helps me finish a project.  This modern, cross like patchwork blanket is super great.  I love the color palette & it can really spice up a room.

apartment living - Speaking of spicing up a room, if you live in an apartment (like I've been accustomed to) adding a colorful crochet throw can bring color into your room.  You can't paint the walls & you can't put holes in 'em either so bringing color into your apartment this way ensures you'll get your deposit back.  It's also great for dorms, you're supplied furniture but the way you dress it can give you a personal look!

modern granny - This is what I am working on now.  I fell in love with that picture & the blue colored yarn.  Not only does the blue accent go well over that bright orange but the open weave gives you a more modern, casual look.  I am hoping that I can convince Zach to do a neutral bedding & then add a pop of color with the throw.  Since he likes dark colors I am thinking about a gray bedspread, white/lighter grey sheets, black accent pillow cases, black crochet throw, & then a pop of color.  We'll see!

combining stitches - Not only is this granny square blanket joined together seemingly seamlessly, it looks as if the first few rows are double crochet & the last row is a treble crochet.  This creates a great visual texture & that mustard color gets me every time! Once the individual squares area ll together adding a blanket stitch instead of a crocheted edging finishes it off in a unique way!

Link Love
++ this tutorial for making a crocheted basket it super awesome.  I never would have thought to make a basket that way.  I was thinking about using macrame cord to make a crocheted table runner or placemats.  What do you think?++

++You should definitely check out that patchwork pattern up close to see the edging detail!++

++This blanket is knit but I love the joining idea: two large halves joined by a stitch.  I'd make that stitch like a neon color!++

Happy Friday y'all! What do you have planned for this weekend?

Dorm Dec Wednesday :: Raising the Bar

A part of a home I've always wanted is a bar.  I always thought it was really classy (or really trashy, depending) when I saw either on TV or in real life homes with bars.  It just seemed really neat to be able to offer a guest something to drink right from your living room! I especially fell in love with little bar carts. Those are more feminine than the little cabinet we have now but I figured with a boy room mate there are somethings that Katie & I should make more manly.  So when he sits down with Jack & Coke he doesn't feel like he has to raise his pinky!!

This cabinet is actually something his mother made with her own two hands.  It originally held a fish tank before he moved east.  It fits perfect in the corner by the couch & has a large cabinet for liquor bottles and margarita/wine/champagne glasses & a top compartment for shot glasses, coasters, & other barware type glasses.

I picked some of the really nice bottles of liquor & a few glasses to put on the top of the cabinet along with a bamboo cutting board so that glasses won't get set on the wood.  I chose this instead of coasters because it would be easy to move coasters around & there might not always be one when someone needs it.  This way the cutting board stays there all the time.  There is no reason to move it so it will be always there to set a glass on.  It will also hold at least three cups so if many people need a place to set a drink that is an option.  Currently there is a pint glass & a coffee cup on it!

To give a bit more of a feminine look (I mean really, 2 women & 1 man live here...something has to be pretty) I got a glass plate/tray thing to go under the bottles & glasses I liked.  I wanted to create a cute little vignette if you will.  I chose the coolest looking bottles & two of their wedding gift glasses to make it look fancy!  I guess I could have taken the stickers off, right?

This is one of my favorite parts of our home.  Next is the fireplace with flameless candles & the mantle. Perhaps that will be featured in the next Dorm Dec Wednesday post.

What is your fave part of your home?
Have you done something decor chic lately?

Dorm Dec Wednesdays : Around my *New* Home

So, we've unpacked (for the most part) & have settled in nicely to our new little town home on the east coast of Virginia.  I am so excited to finally be in one place, have my own room with my own things, & to have a place to decorate!

The only problem we have faced is that my room mate & I have two different tastes: I am a pattern & color freak and she is more of a traditional 'match the couch to the drapes' person.  So far it's worked out...I just need to sneak a few more pieces of mine onto the wall. (shhhhh.....)

Since Dorm Dec Wednesdays are all about living in a tiny place, I thought I'd share the some of the tiny parts of our home & back yard:

Entry way with place for keys, bags, & sunnies
Artwork behind front door (my brother painted that in grade school!)

Family Room:
flameless candles in the fireplace!
Right side of fire place is the tv, wii, games, etc
Left side of the fire place is a little desk area.
Bottom left pic: view from the couch to the cute little back yard

Kitchen table right before the Engagement Party
(soon to be blogged!)

Our Back Yard:

I love my iPhone!

We have a large tree in our little fenced in back yard.
There is a little patio, some plantar boxes, & a little shed attached to the side of the house.
Once we get some little chairs it will be perfect to sit in & read or drink tea.

Currently, since our dryer is broken, I have clothes line strung between the tree & the fence a few times to hang my clothes on.  The sun is doing a pretty good job drying them!

Do you have favorite corners of your home?
Share them with me!

Things to add to my Thrift List

So, we've finally settled on a place to live, I have the prospect of a new job,
& I can't wait for things to just smooth out
(please send positive job thoughts my way today!)

I've been thinking of some new things to add to my thrift list since we might go out thrifting today:

- large mirror

I really want a big one to lean to the wall on top of my dresser.

- alarm clock

- rake head

Isn't this the greatest?? I know a junk shop back at school that had everything related to old tools like this. I really hope I can find an awesome little shop in my new town!
I still haven't found a great thrift shop yet....but it's my quest!

- storage baskets

You know, cuz you can never store enough things!

- assorted tins

I really want a little place on my dresser with a tray & some candles, right in front of the mirror.
It will look so cute, right?

I just can't wait to be settled.
What are you looking to thrift?
PS. Don't forget to check out the link parties in the Side Bar or click here!

Bottle Collections

I have always loved collecting - it's true - and I especially love bottle collections.
You may remember this post where I mentioned
an old room mate who's aunt collected bottles she found on the beach.
Some of the clear ones, over time, turned lavender.
So beautiful.

I bought a bottle of sparkling water the other day just because I love sparkling water
Then I realized that the bottle was really cool looking.
So here is the first bottle in my bottle collection.
I probably want about 4 or 5 more to add to it.
I am hoping they aren't all green, I just want some interesting shapes.

Here are some collections I love

What have you been up to lately?
I've been trying to keep up with all my blog projects but so far its been so bad!
I've been busy with apartment hunting, job hunting, and just plain 'ol work.
I can't wait to settle down.
PS. Don't forget to check out the link parties in the Side Bar or click here!
