Daily Actions to Use Your Word of the Year

Each year for the past quite a few years I've chosen a word to work with for the 365 days of that year.  Some years have been more successful than others.  Most years I choose a word and then say 'oh shit, I guess I picked that word 360 days ago.  Yikes!' near the end of the year.  But some years I've been super intentional.
this post contains affiliate links, please read my full disclosure here.

Words I've chosen before have been Focus, Explore, Forward, Mindful, & Authentic.  I think that Mindful (2017) and Authentic (2018) were the first words that I really, really worked with a significant portion of the year.  In 2017 I did the Ali Edwards One Little Word journal class which was very helpful to work with my word consistently.  In 2018 I created a Journaling Challenge to help myself find my word and connect with it in the beginning of the year.  I intended to repeat the challenge in 2019, changing the prompts a little for that year but I honestly can't remember if I completed it or not.  Unofficially I'm going to say my word for 2019 was GROWTH, better yet how about TRANSFORM.  I grew a whole damn human and grew myself too.  If the word of the year is about transformation, boy 2019 was a transformation.  I wasn't able to do this in 2020, but the prompts are perfect for anytime of the year!

In this post though, I want to share with you four simple exercises to connect to your word.  You don't have to get elaborate or feel intimidated.  This is to help you take actions each day while only putting in the effort to create the actions once!  Here is how to connect with your word and work with it consistently all year.

Define it

First, define your word.  Put this at the front of your planner or on your mirror or on your fridge or in your car or at your desk.  Put the definition in multiple places.  Just be sure you put it where you'll see it everyday.  When you define your word you get close to what it actually, truly means.  This will help you to decide which aspect of the definition you want to apply to your life.  Maybe there is a meaning you didn't know existed.  Maybe the official definition is surprising to you.  When you define it you'll have a literal grasp of what the word means and then you can find out what it means to you.

Choose 3 areas to apply your word

Since you'll want to work with this word each day choose three areas of your life that you want to improve with your word.  Start with a broad area you want to improve like family or home, personal, work, or health.  Then narrow that down with three more (or fewer) focus areas for each section.  When it comes to creating your focus areas, ask yourself how your word of the year can be applied to your broad areas.  My broad sections this year are family, personal, and online.  Then I asked myself how I'd find HARMONY in these three ares.

  • Harmony with my family means spending time together as a family of three, giving more, and nurturing our partnership.
  • Harmony in my personal life means focusing on my spirituality, moving more, and finding time for self-care.
  • Harmony for my online presence means prioritizing creating content for my blog, my Etsy shop, and my YouTube channel.

Create daily actions

After you've narrowed down the areas of your life you'd like to improve or focus on with your word, create a list of a daily action (or a few) you can take to apply the word to your life.  For example, to spend time with my family I can plan healthy meals, eat at the dinner table, and intentionally shut out technology (phones, computer, distractions, etc).  Once you create your daily actions you'll be more likely to take the steps to implement your word rather than just choose it and be done with it.  Creating these daily actions also gives you something that you can track.  Use a habit tracker in you planner or in your phone to remind you to take these actions daily.

Reflect monthly

Once you've outlined what you'll attempt to do each day to incorporate your word into your life, be sure to set aside time each month to reflect.  Maybe you keep a journal each day of how you implemented your actions.  You could even do a monthly or weekly habit tracker.  Take time when your planning the next month in your planner or calendar to ask yourself how you'll take these daily actions in the future.  Remember, everyday is a new day and don't think a missed day or a missed week is a failure.  Resolve to do better.  Outline how you will do better.  And then do better.  The only person you need to be better than is the person you were yesterday....and it's ok if you fall behind.  Just do the next thing!  Just keep going!

Bonus: Create a Vision Board

A bonus activity to connect to your word of the year is to create a vision board.  Choose your word and define it on your board.  Then create some branches off of that word with your three areas.  Under these areas clip pictures from magazines or your Pinterest boards that represent success in these areas.  Be sure to include some images of yourself succeeding at those areas too!  When you see yourself on your board you're more likely to identify with it!  In fact I have a whole post on creating a successful vision board right here.

Connecting with your word of the year can be a make or break type of deal.  Spoilers: if you don't feel like you connect with your word, go ahead and change it!  This whole thing is about growth so if you outgrow your word or if it isn't serving you, change it!  Doing the January Journaling Jump Start can help you to find a word that you can connect with by asking you questions about your current state.  But if that state changes...feel free to change your word.  It's your life to live!

I love breaking down my word in the these manageable chunks because I'm more likely to take action if I have an outlined action to take.  Saying to myself 'I'd like to find Harmony this year' doesn't really help me to find it.  It's about creating space for your word to occupy through daily actions and behaviors.

If you want some inspiration for a vision board or working with your word this year check out my Vision Planner video over on my YouTube channel.  You can also find a ton of Word of the Year posts on the blog especially this one on Mantras.  Mantras are my favorite way to work with words each year!  I shared on Instagram my mantra for my word Harmony, you can see it here.  Read more about my vision planner here.

2019 January Journaling Jump Start

Well, here we are again.  Another year over & a new on just begun.  Last year I did my own little journal prompt exercise to discover my word of the yearIt's not that other prompts & challenges out there were bad...it was just that I was bad at them.  Sometimes I need something that fits me instead of me trying to fit in.
this post contains affiliate links, please read my full disclosure here.

I will say, over the years there's been quite a few things I don't fit into and I've learned to blaze my own trail rather than try to follow along.  And so the January Journaling Jump Start was born!

Last year was my first year coming up with the prompts and this year I changed just a few of them to align more with what I'm looking to discover.  So here we go.

What is the January Journaling Jump Start?

This is a four week journaling prompt exercise to help you reflect on 2018, plan for 2019, research who you want to be, and outline your next action steps.  Each week has a theme - reflect, plan, research, outline - and 7 prompts to help you connect with each theme.  You can take just a few moments to jot down the answer or get creative in your journal to do a little bit of self care.
This month long activity will help you discover the perfect word to live by in 2019.  Your word should be personal & it should be something you can incorporate into your everyday life over the next year.  It's all about focusing on how you want to feel in the new year not necessarily a physical thing you want to gain.  It's about making space for a new you so that you can become the person you'd like to be.

How Can I Get Started?

First download the prompts in the link below.  You'll find a set of journaling cards featuring the prompts as well as a link for a planner template download.  There are a TON of ways to do this though - use your current journal, create a mini album, make a dedicated travelers notebook, start a listing journal, add it into your vision planner - just get to it!
The best part is that you can be creative in the way that really connects with you!  And hey, if these prompts don't connect with you create your own challenge and share it with us in the Five Sixteenths | Live Creative group over on Facebook!

If you want to check out last year's journal prompts (they are very similar so you can totally use those journal cards too), click hereThe journal cards for this year's prompts work perfectly with the December Patreon Printable of the Month, too.  If you're down to join in on an ever growing library of printables, join the Printable of the Month Club for only $3 a month!  Click here to join.

Happy 2019 my friends!

What is your word for 2019?  Have you chosen a word for your year before?

5 Creative Ways to use Graph Paper in your Mini Happy Planner

My Mini Happy Planner is currently the only planner I use on a regular basis.  It holds EVERYTHING for me!  There are two major reasons why I use the Happy Planner brand exclusively for my weekly planner - the disc bound system & the cute yet functional accessories.
this post contains affiliate links, please read my full disclosure here.
Prior to the emergence of the Happy Planner (which, side note, can we just reflect on how much the planner options have grown in recent years?) I relied on making inserts myself for various ring bound planners.  It was perfect for me...until it got overwhelming.  I would spend painstaking hours trying to create the perfect planner page for myself.  It got to be that I was spending too much time working on a planner page than actually using my planner.  Being too dang specific with my layouts really bummed me out.

When I found the Mini Happy Planner I was sold on the ease of it all.  It was already done for me, there was nothing for me to fenagle, I could just use it as is.  But once the brand started adding cute yet functional accessories I found myself getting right back into my love of planning.  Planner peace?  I'm not quite sure....but I sure am happy with it!

One of the first accessories or extensions I bought was the lined & graph filler paper pack. This was just supposed to be for quick notes and ideas but has become one of my favorite products from the brand.  They are blank & they are versatile!  Pair these perfectly gridded and beautifully lined pages with the hundreds of stickers & sticker books from the Happy Planner and you're set for creating fun & functional lists, trackers, and dashboards right in your planner.  Here are 5 of my favorite ideas for using graph paper in your planner:

Cleaning Routine

One of the unintentional themes of my life, my planner, and my blog is cleaning.  I've been obsessed with coming up with an effective & simple cleaning routine that I just flipping do!  Who else struggles with keeping their house neat and tidy?  Just me?  Lordy I hope not!  Back in January I shared a post on being your best self and this post inspired me to write out practical routines that will make my life better....and cleaning was one of them.

The graph filler paper plus some of the more functional stickers from the MAMBI Today is the Day pack & Quotes pack packs make creating your cleaning routines fun.  Sprinkle in some washi & some quotes and you'll be inspired in no time.  I broke my cleaning routine in to zones, though not the traditional zones that I believe are in zone cleaning.  This is just what works the best for me.  Learn more about my journey developing a cleaning routine here.

Vision Board

I have a whole separate vision planner that I use as a place for visual inspiration to align myself with my goals (or vision) for the year!  But in my everyday planner I like to have a reminder of the things I'm working towards in the year.
Again, I pair some functional stickers with some of the quotes and washi to make an inspiring place to fill in my goals.  The old Productivity Sticker book as well as the Student Sticker book and the new Colorful Boxes sticker book would be great for this little project.

Bucket List

The seasonal MAMBI sticker books already have seasonally inspired bucket lists for you to stick in your planner, but you can totally get creative with what you put on yours.  By using the different decor stickers you can create a custom bucket list for a season, holiday, vacation, etc.
A cool idea for this would to do a weekend getaway bucket list using some of the seasonal stickers especially if you're going away with family and have a few memories you want to check off.  The Memory Planner sticker books would be great for this!

Daily Routine

Back to visualizing your best self here!  What does you're ideal daily routine look like?  You can use the graph paper to outline hour by hour what you'd like your day to look like.  I know that the new Fill In Productivity sticker book has hourly stickers designed for the classic size, but you could trim them to fit down the Mini Happy Planner for your morning and evening routine.
I also like to make a weekend routine so that I stay on track with prepping for the next week.  Sticking to the routine is the hard part!

Project Planner

As a blogger sometimes I have a lot of things going on at once so it's nice to be able to breakdown a project into steps.  I usually do this for the essential oil classes I offer but sometimes I'll do it for bigger projects like ebooks as well.
Both of the Student Sticker books (this one & this one) hav these project stickers where you can name the project, add a few details, and then add a due date.  Now I have a whole sheet dedicated to that project!

The lined & graph filler paper is such a versatile addition to your planner especially if you need a little bit more space to write and plan things or if you find yourself going to too many different notebooks for what you need.  It's fun to get creative in your planner and these creative projects can also be functional!  If you want to see more ways to keep your planner fun yet functional check out this post, too.

The whole Happy Planner line is both fun & functional.  I love collecting everything I can from the line so I have a bunch of options when it is time to create something new.

How do you use graph paper in your planner?  What fun yet functional things to you include in your planners?

5 Vision Board Tips to Help you Slay your Goals

A few weekends ago I went to a vision board party hosted by my friend Monique from Many Sides to Me & Rosalinda.  Monique hosted a little vision board party in 2017 and I was dying for her to host one for 2018!  Last year my Vision Planner was the place I put anything & everything related to the life I wanted to lead in the last year and it helped me so much!
this post contains affiliate links, please read my full disclosure here.
This year, the vision board meet up started as a little thing.  Something not too big, just at one of their houses, a few close friend & acquaintances.  From what I hear it expanded out to include 70+ invites!  They ended up hosting it at the Miracle Center over in Chicago which was a lovely place.  30+ women attended and all of us shared laughter & a little bit of champagne.  I mean there was a mimosa bar.......
What moved me the most was Monique's willingness to open up about her own planning, blogging, & motherhood journey and how she wishes to devote her life to inspiring other women.  Through just a few tears, she revealed the reason she chose her blog name - Many Sides to Me - is because of how multifaceted her life is.  She's got interests here, there, & everywhere!  During her little speech and through listening to the other women tell as much as they wanted about themselves & their goals for 2018, I realized that womanhood is multifaceted.  It was such an honor to be in a room with women who I didn't know, open up about their lives, challenges, and visions for 2018.

I even met another planner girl, Nubia from Nubia Plans, who finally was able to answer my question "what the heck size is B6?!?".  Everyone there seemed to connect on such a deep level that it truly inspired me to see that magic happens when women gather.
So I started in on my Vision Planner for 2018 at the little meet up.  Luckily there were tons of magazines there to cut up as I only had images I'd pulled from my blog, my Pinterest boards, and my Instagram.  Flipping through magazine after magazine got me incredibly inspired and I want to share with you some tips on making a vision board that works for you :

Host or attend a vision board party

I have to say, like I did above, it is very inspiring to be around individuals that are excited to make small changes in their lives.  Surrounding yourself with this energy is more likely to help you realize what you'd like for your year as well.  Not to mention it gives you time to be social in a supportive atmosphere and encourage your friends to set and reach their goals.  Your party doesn't have to be 50 women gathered it can be your close friends or even family.  Set up a crafty day for you and your BFF!

Break your vision board into areas

It can become overwhelming to think about your whole life and all the things you want to change.  By breaking your board into smaller areas you're more likely to focus on the actionable tasks you can take to improve those sections of your life.  Back in the January Journaling Jump Start, one prompt asked you to think of three areas of your life you'd like to work on.  You can break your board in to areas like home, relationships, & wellness or spiritual, finances, family...the possibilities are endless!  Then you can focus on the small changes you'd like to see in your life in each of those areas and choose images that inspire the changes you'd like to make.  You wan to be able to see yourself living in the images you choose.  If you've like a fun planner insert to help you with feeling your goals this year, join the Printable of the Month Club over on Patreon!

Include images of yourself

Speaking of seeing yourself in your vision board, include images of yourself or photos you've taken that embody the goal you'd like to achieve.  Personally, I include things like images of my What I Wore posts because at those moments I've felt my most authentic self.  I also include images from blog posts, everyday images from instagram, even some from family vacations because in those moments I was living the life I wanted.  And I want to usher more of that in to my life this year!  Seeing that you're already making the changes to live the life you're looking for will inspire you to do more of what makes you feel that way.

Change up the layout

Since I have six areas of my life I like to work on each year I put my vision board into what I call a Vision Planner.  This year it is a 6x9 ish size, disc bound grided notebook that I paste images into.  There are 6 dividers and I get really creative with it.  But you can use a notebook (the common place book is really popular right now), digital software, pocket scrapbooking pages...anything that inspires you.  If you're not really feeling the actual board part of the vision board - maybe for lack of space - create another place for your vision for the year that you will look at everyday.  I kept my 2017 Vision Planner right next to my computer on my desk so I could flip through it often.  This year as I continue to work on the Vision Planner, I have mine in my new Raskog planner cart!

Make a Mini Board

Carrying the inspiration for the life you want to live around with you is a great reminder to keep making small changes everyday.  In my Mini Happy Planner I made a smaller vision board with the available pocket pages.  Add in your main focus for the year, then add something about each of your areas.  Then use each of the pockets for an image or quote that inspires you to work towards your vision.  In mine, I used images from my life to remind me there are moments where I'm perfectly aligned and to usher in more of those moments daily!
A vision board is a great practice to get into at the beginning of the year (or anytime you need to align your intentions!).  Its not too late to get started on yours for 2018, either.  Gather up some friends or your favorite inspiring podcast and flip through those magazines & Pinterest boards.  Layout the life you'd like to lead then make small changes daily so you can see yourself in the pictures.

January Journaling Jump Start // Find your 2018 Word of the Year

Something I've been doing for quite a few years now is choosing a word to work into my life for a year.  Some years I choose it and then forget it, some years it ends up being more prominent.  Last year was the first year I did Ali Edwards One Little Word and that really changed my relationship with my word.  Truth be told I only completed 1/3 of the prompts but that was enough to help me live mindfully in 2017.
this post contains affiliate links, please read my full disclosure here.
This project helped me incorporate my word into my everyday life.  It allowed me to work long enough with it that Mindful naturally became an important thought for me each day!  This year, my word for 2018 came to me rather early.  I chose Authentic because, during my mindful journey, I began to develop beliefs and to see my current beliefs evolve & change.  I realized that in some ways I was deceiving myself by believing one thing but taking no action towards it in my life.  In fact, the 7 of Swords showed up rather early in 2017 and that is what inspired me to choose the word Authentic.  I especially love the 7 of Swords in the After Tarot because it shows self deception!  You think you're getting away with something....but you're gonna get tripped up!

I do hope to do a blog post on my word, but this post is not that post!  Today I want to share with you a journaling activity through January that can help you to discover your word of the year and take action towards it.

What is January Journaling Jump Start?

JJJS is a 4 week, 28 day long prompt a day journaling project designed to help you find your word of the year.  This doesn't have to be done in January either.  Any time is a great time to change it up and get focused!

Like I mentioned earlier, your word for the year should be something you actively incorporate into your life.  2017 was the first year I did that and it was great!  But finding ways to do so...or even finding a word that resonates with you can be hard.  The way I find my words is through a little bit of mental reflection on who I am and where I want to be.  I focus on how I want to feel in the coming year.  Personally, I don't focus on something physically I can gain - a new house, a new car, a new waistline....etc.  Focusing on how we want to feel is the best way, I think, to make sure we can shift our thinking and in turn achieve our goals.  So this journaling activity is designed to help you reflect, plan, research, and then set actionable goals in three areas of your life!
The first week is about reflection.  What was 2017 for you?  What do you want 2018 to be for you?  What did you start?  What did you finish?  It is about bringing together your accomplishments from last year and pushing your successes into the next.

The second week is about planning.  Where do you want to see improvement this year?  What inspired you last year?  What do you want to embrace in 2018?  What do you want to release?  Discover the best you that you can be in 2018 and make a plan to get there.

The third week is about inspiration & research.  Find quotes that inspire you & words you'd like to use to describe yourself.  Pinterest is a great way to find amazing quotes.  I start a board full of quotes that inspire me as I try to decide on my word.  At the end of this week you can look at your quotes & start to see a pattern.  What word can sum up these quotes?

In the last week, begin to outline how you'll incorporate the word you've discovered in the three improvement areas you chose the second week!  Finally begin to make weekly action steps so that you can incorporate your word into your daily life.

How can I get started?

While this is not a group challenge with a community behind it - honestly, I've never really felt those accountability groups helped me...they always made me feel less than for not doing things on time or in a certain way - I encourage you to download the journaling cards & the weekly planner layout below.
If you're down for something like a mini album, go ahead and do that!  Use the journaling cards in any pocket albums you do or do what I'm doing - working in my new vision planner.  I am currently using a Happy Planner size pages for my vision planner (about 7 x 9 inches) this year.  I assembled some printed graph paper on Mini Happy Planner discs and put it in Websters Pages Composition planner cover.  I also threw in some of the happy planner pocket pages because that's how I like to do my OLW stuff too.  Doing a journaling activity like this, I think, is best done on planner pages so that you have them all together.  Print out the weekly planner pages, date them, and get your word jump started!

You don't have to follow this up with another Word of the Year project, but I'd highly suggest it.  I plan on doing One Little Word again this year even if I only complete 3 months worth of prompts!  I do hope you are able to find a word this year that will help you.  Make sure to follow along on Instagram as I share with you how I've filled out the January Journaling Jump Start prompts!  Join the Five Sixteenths | Live Creatively group for more journaling inspiration.

What word did you choose?  How do you incorporate it into your daily life?

Make it Monday // DIY Digital Mantra Vision Board

I have been working on my vision planner (check out how I work in my Vision Planner here!) which also coincides with my first official year doing the One Little Word class by Ali Edwards.  The March prompt was all about vision boards.  But it was about vision boards in a different way.
I often think about a vision board as a (sometimes) cluttered mess of things you like all pasted onto poster board and then shoved into a spot in your room/office/home where you look at it...but it may not speak to you.  This idea has always frustrated me because I don't find order in that approach.  It wasn't until I watched a few vision board and goal setting style videos that I realized creating a vision board is a unique experience and should reflect the creator.  There isn't a one size fits all vision board.

And that is where my vision planner came in.
I have this guy divided up into some areas of my life I'd like to focus on all while keeping my word of the year Mindful in mind.  I also have sections for each of the One Little Word prompts and when I happen upon something that fits with in these prompts I roll with it an put that in there too!  I am not going to get too much into my vision planner sections right now...but the section I'm working on right now, today, with you is my spirituality section.  I hesitated to name it that all they way up until this blog post because I am not religious.  I see the word spirituality as a slippery slope into religion.  But I recently happened upon a free webinar by Alexis AKA Miss Trenchcoat called How to Manifest a Successful Astrological New Year and I realized that all signs are pointing to the things I'm becoming interested in - essential oils, meditation, working with crystals, etc - is culminating in a desire to explore my spiritual relationship with myself.  I can't deny it, I have to embrace it.  I've always been a believer in signs.  So I knew that this little section I'd originally called Wellness needed a better suited name if I was also going to start working with astrological signs and tarot.  Long story short - signs are pointing me to look inward, reflect, and work on discovering myself.
this post contains affiliate links, please read my full disclosure here.

So....February's prompt was to practice something everyday.  I didn't do it.  I didn't.  But March's prompt was to create vision boards regarding your word.  Ali suggested pulling a full page from a magazine and finding words that inspired you.  I thought I'd combine the two and create some vision boards with images I found that reminded me of my word and my intent and added some quotes that I could meditate on during the month.  Here's how you can make some mantra vision boards for yourself - make them as phone wall papers, computer backgrounds, or print them out like I did.

supplies // inspiring digital images, PicMonkey.com, card stock, printer

I highly suggest the images you use for this project be royalty free images and not images from Pinterest.  My favorite place for royalty free images is Unsplash.com.  It literally is like flipping through a digital magazine.  The best part is that you can search images by keyword.  I searched my word mindful but I also searched meditate, mindfulness, etc.  I looked into the collections as there were few results of images labeled with those words.  So just flip through and find images you like.  Save them to your computer or your device to work with later.
Find quotes or mantras you identify with.  In the original prompt, Ali suggested just trimming words form the magazines that inspired you.  They didn't have to directly reflect the word you've chosen for the year...just words that spoke to you.  I searched Pinterest for Mindfulness Quotes and created a board of the quotes I loved.
For this tutorial we're going to work with PicMonkey.com and their new(ish) Template Feature.  This is something rather new to me but it is super cool if you're not design inclined all the time.  The designs are premade for you - you just fill in the info!  Choose a template you like - keeping the size of the end result in mind -iPhone wallpaper, printed image, etc.  Once you've selected the template, right click on the main image to replace it with the image you've saved from Unsplash.
It is now that you can manipulate the text.  Try to choose a template that will fit your text/quote with out too much change.  That way you'll still get the feel of the template you chose.  This one with bold text supports a smaller quote.  If you find the color of the text doesn't really match the feel of the photo change it to better reflect your feelings.  I always choose either black or white to keep it simple.
Here is another example of a template I used - I liked the layout of the text but the end result doesn't resemble the original template.  You can see this one started off as an invitation but I changed it to be more poster like.  It is ok to start off with something interesting but change it up to fit your design aesthetic.
One of the new things I love about PicMonkey is the layers pane.  Not only are these templates pretty cool but the layer pane really helps you be precise with your designing.  You get more control with out the process becoming to complicated for the average user.  There are some special options & special templates that are available only if you're a Premium or the new Supremium customer.  While you can do a lot with this editor for free, these two subscriptions allow you to do more, more, more!  And work with the Hub feature that allows you to save your work!  How cool is that?  Learn more about the subscriptions here.
Now you're ready to print the mantra vision boards out or add them as backgrounds on your mobile device.  The way these guys work for me is something that I can reflect upon while meditating, something I can fall back on and repeat when I need the support, and words that I can work towards emulating in my everyday life.
You can also create these digital designs with various other tutorials I've shared on my blog - digitize your hand writing and use that as an overlay, use transparent clip art to add to your design, create these digital designs on your iPad with the Phonto app, or choose a few of these overlay apps to add to your mantras.
