My Summer 2012 Essentials - Dressing for my Body Type

A little while ago, before Zach left, I posted about my Weekend Requirements when going on a little weekend getaway.  Unfortunately we never got around to taking a little trip before he left as we had a lot of packing up to do for him.  As the warm weather creeps closer I am slowly but surely breaking out of the shell of winter.  That means taking care of my skin in prep for slightly bare arms, shaving my legs, and busting out the bathing suits.

I've mentioned before that I have a rather modest sense of style.  I don't like to show too much arm, or leg, or skin, etc.  This is one because I don't feel comfortable with parts of my body showing too much because of my plus size stature and two because my shape is flattered more if i have bits and pieces covered up.  Hence no shorty-shorts, a one piece bathing suit instead of a bikini, and often the use of light weight cardigans.  I like my shirts to fall close to my elbow & rely heavily on the camisol & sheer top combination.  That way I have coverage without being hot.  I assume I am dressing right for my body type, but more importantly I am dressing in what makes me feel the best about myself!  I touched a bit on how & why I dress the way I do here.
Summer Needs

Jean Shorts, Sleeved Shirt // This type of outfit is my go to beach, shopping, running around, hanging out outfit. It's simple and relaxed, yet put together.  I am really loving the trend towards flowy sheer tops and camis underneath (which is probably what I'd pair this coral shirt with).  That style keeps you cool & covered if you're like me and don't like a lot of skin to show.  The best part of summer is if you can't think of something to wear you'll always look pulled together if you pair your jeans with a proper top - I would wear this top to work probably with a pair of khakis.  Versatility, baby!

Tank Top, Skirt // Even though I am a bit modest, I still like the sundress look.  This set gives you a pulled together look for a date, a girls day out, or a summer cook out.  I'd have a skirt that falls just above the knee and maybe a cardigan (like the one above) if I feel too bare.  The fitted waist of this shirt also gives you a feminine shape - that I love.  Floral & feminine sums up my go to summer style for dates, days out, or Summer get togethers

Swim Suit, Lightweight Cardigan, Jean Shorts // I am dying to find another swim suit in the cut & style of this yellow one.  A yellow one wouldn't be too bad, but I don't know if I can pull it off!  I like apron style swim suit is the style I go to each year because it covers my hips.  I don't feel comfortable in the swim suits that come up over my hip, but this apron style is very Marylin Monroe.  I also like it because usually the long part over your hips isn't attached to the bottoms of the swimsuit.  So when I am out on the lake, I'll throw a pair of shorts on & pull the apron part over them & it looks like a shirt!  Then toss on a really light, short sleeved cardigan.  If you have to get off the boat to go into the marina store or need to head off the pool to grab a snack, you don't have to walk around in your swimsuit.  You'll look like you're wearing clothes!

Sandals, Flip Flops // Sandals go well with your put together outfits & flip flops are great to just toss on your feet fresh off the boat, beach, or out of the pool.  I love a good pair of sandals that can take a bit of wear & tear during the summer.  I have a t-strap sandal from last summer that is still going strong.  I don't think I'll buy another pair this year (except for maybe black).  These sandals were a good investment! I also only try to buy a pair of flip flops a year.  Old Navy has the cheapest with their $1 sales usually but Target has had my all time favorite ones ever.

Bag, Scarf, Sunnies // A canvas weekend style bag is perfect for the beach.  You can throw all your essentials (sunscreen, towel, novel, etc) in there & be set.  This scarf is another way to pull together the swimsuit-as-a-shirt look.  If you are done with a day at the beach as the sun sets & are looking to go grab some dinner, if the air is cool enough a lightweight scarf can add more pizzazz to your swimsuit look.  Now it really doesn't look like a swimsuit.  Finally, big sunglasses are a must. Who are we kidding?

So there you have it, a few of my Summer necessities.  I can't wait to pull out my Summer clothes & get cracking on some outfit posts.  I am excited to add that bit to the blog here & think I've decide to switch up my blog schedule by not calling Tempted Tuesdays Tempted Tuesdays any more.  A post about what I am tempted to buy or make or wear or stuff I am totally into will still be on Tuesdays but I just won't call it buy a name.  I think it looks better to search engines & allows more room for your post title in sites like HelloCotton. I'll probably keep Make it Monday, Fan Friday, & Sum up Sunday labeled because those sort of describe the post....I am just not sure Tempted Tuesday describes anything.  hmmmmm....What do you think?

Stick around! The Medium Sponsors are gonna be introduced this afternoon! If you're interested in sponsorship, advertising, guest posts, or giveaways, peep my sponsorship page & policies for more info.  Then shoot me an email!

Tempted Tuesdays // Maxi Appeal

I love being clever with my post titles, I just feel so awesome when I can do a clever pun once in a while.  Go me.  I wore this outfit about a week ago while hanging out with my aunts & grandma after Zach left.  This is my fave skirt right now.  I am so happy that Spring is finally here so I can wear skirts & dresses with out tights.  Warm weather is the best!

  // Details: //
Skirt // TJ Maxx
Shirt // Target
Cardigan // Forever 21
Belt, black ring, Necklaces // Icing
Brown ring // Honeybean
Silver Snake ring // Khols
Opal Ring // JCP (Xmas present from Zach)

Our backyard is currently a baby oak tree nursery.  None of us are real gardeners & I know we are dreading having to pull each of those guys up before we move.  It's pretty cute, like a rain forest.

This skirt I got at TJ Maxx for 15 bucks on sale.  I saw it & immediately picked it up.  It has a bit of pleating in, too.  I like it because it's perfect for work & for play.  I'd wear this same outfit to work & in fact it reminds me of an outfit an elementary school art teacher would wear.

I've been totally loving Maxi skirts right now & actually found some on Ebay for around 20 bucks that I want to order, but I am going to keep checking thrift stores, too.  Here are a few in a set on Polyvore from Modcloth:

The green one is super cool with it's scalloped hem & pockets.  Getting my hands on an assortment of colors is my goal!

I also have a long crazy, lacy dress from the thrift store that I can't decide if I want to make it into a maxi skirt or keep it as a dress.  I'll probably never wear it as a dress but it has a nice sort of shape.  Perhaps I'll just bite the bullet & cut and sew it!

Are you attracted to Maxi Skirts?

Stripes on Stripes // Weekend Outfit

This past weekend I spent with my parents since Zach was away in Michigan on his interview.  I got to hang out with my fave little brother-pup & listen to my brothers sing Kelly Clarkson while playing video games.  My family is pretty crazy!

Heres a fun fact: I have one biological brother & two brothers from another mother.  These two kids are at my parents' house all the time, they are my brother's friends, but they will even come over just to hang out as a part of the family.  One is my dad's sort of young photography padawan.  On Friday, I accidentally punched the padawan in the face when he came up behind me.  He'd just gotten his braces off and I almost made him need reconstructive nose surgery! He was a lot closer than I thought he was when I went to pretend-punch him. whoops!

I went shopping with my mother on Saturday, too.  I wasn't expecting to buy anything but then we stumbled upon Sears in one of the malls going-out-of-business sale where I scored some nice cardigans & a sheer shirt for 60% off.  Then we went in to JC Penny & found even more great deals with their fair & square pricing.  (I still don't get it, but I'll take the deal!) I never buy anything full price.  One, I cant afford it & two, it just makes sense!

Details:
Jeans // Forever21
Necklace, Scarf (worn as shirt) // Icing
Cardigan // Sears sale
Sandals // no idea, so long ago
Ring // JC Penny (xmas gift from Zach)
Nail Polish // Wet n Wild

I also tried out the moon manicure & think it was mildly successful.  It was better on my left hand than my right but I liked it.  Perfect easter color!  I used round stickers instead of those punched hole reinforcer things & guess it worked.  I am so torn on this manicure: it looks cool but I also think it looks sorta dumb on me.  The pink & the mint are gorgeous together.  Of course I used my favorite top coat for this manicure to make it last.

My camera died on me when I was going to take pictures of how I did it, so instead I'll link to this great tutorial.  I couldn't for the life of me find any of those reinforcer things in the tutorial...so I used circle stickers from the dollar tree.  The ones you'd use for like a yard sale, that you'd write the price on.  I also cut them in half so they would form better around my nails.

I am super excited about this cardigan.  Mint & stripes......I am in love.

How has your week been? I know it's only Wednesday, but I can't wait for the weekend!

Our Trip to Michigan // My Yellow Shoes

I bought the most horrid, most absolutely awesome yellow shoes from Michigan.  You can pick them up too because they are at Icing by Claire's.  When I purchased these, the first to purchase them from that store mind you, I knew they were the best shoes ever....that I'd have to try consciously to wear.  They won't go with everything....but they could.

Details
Jeans // Forever21 plus
Top & Cuckoo Clock Necklace // Target
Belt, Shoes, Nail Polish, Triangle Ring // Icing
Bracelet, Red Blazer // Thrifted
Sunnies // Big Lots (of all places)
-also, I promise that's just funny jean bunching in these pics.  promise-

These photos were taken by Zach, of course.  I am so thankful to have him helping me out & being so supportive of my creative things.

This blazer has become my favorite.  I also have a yellow & a pink one I thrifted at the same time.  They are great for spring!

Do you have a crazy accessory you love but can't seem to fit in to your outfits?

Tempted Tuesday // Style Something Blue

For some reason, I've got the blues lately.  I think it's because a student at work came in with bright blue nail polish!  It looked so great as a pop of color, I've been thinking about it ever since.  Vibrant colors like oranges, reds, & royal blue seem to be paired up for this Spring.  In fact, pantone named these colors, including Sodalite Blue, as the spring 2012 colors.  However, if you don't want to blind your coworkers, friends, fellow shoppers or party goers, I suggest using this royal blue as an accent.

View set info here on Polyvore
Each of these awesome pieces can be used as a Sodalite Blue accent to your spring wardrobe without being overly blinding!

one // two // three // four // five // six // seven
  1. Pair a blue handbag with a weekend date outfit.  Add a few other Pantone colors (like the Tangerine Tango) to add a little complimentary burst.
  2. Go nautical with a Red, Blue, & Striped get up.  The striped top, scarf, & bracelet bring in a bit of French nautical flair.
  3. A geode inspired Sodalite Blue ring goes perfect for that concert on the lawn or day trip to the flea market.  I am digging geodes this spring & this royal blue is perfect.
  4. Another (& more affordable) way to work Sodalite Blue into your weekend wardrobe is as a nail polish.  This pop of color goes great with bold golds & Solar Power yellows.  Keep your shoes, belts, & other accessories, like scarves, deep neutrals.
  5. For the day trip photographer, balance a deep neutral with a soft neutral & add a royal blue watch.  This cool contrast mimics the sea against the ocean if you're headed beach side for a little day-off adventure.
  6. For the sophisticated shopaholic a flowy shirt, sandals, & jeans make the perfect outfit trying clothes.  Easy to slip on & off, these three shopping staples go great with a primary paletter.  Red, Yellow, & Blue keep your palette & style simple.
  7. Finally, you may feel like Kate Middleton in this Sodalite Blue inspired party outfit.  Perfect for a bridal shower, wedding, baby shower, formal picnic, sunday service, or fancy date, this blue dress has a silhouette that suites every shape.  This is my favorite dress shape at the moment!
I love using Polyvore to make up outfits for the seasons.  It's like having a virtual closet.  You can also see what an outfit may look like before you go shopping or use it as inspiration for shopping!

Do you find the Pantone Colors of the Year helpful?  How about that Tangerine Tango?

Typical Work Outfit // Shape & Life

I sit behind a desk all day.  A very tiny desk.  In fact, we will be moving locations in the beginning of April where I will have the largest desk in the history of offices.  It is huge.  I will take a picture when we've settled into our new office.  But you won't believe it, I promise.

Since I sit behind a desk all day, no one really appreciates my shoes....except for when I stand up.  Some days I stand up & end up being a foot taller.  Since I am the first to come in no one really sees what I wear either.  And since I tend to wear creative outfits it's sometimes a fan fare when I step out from behind the desk.  Not to brag or anything :)

My typical outfit is a skirt/shirt/cardigan combo.  Since I am a rather curvy gal, I like wearing cardigans to break up my shape.  I also am all about skirts at the waist to give me more of a feminine shape.  I have really broad shoulders & a waist and hips that are about the same size....not the feminine shape I'd like to have!

These were shots I wasn't expecting to use! Zach was snapping pictures before I was ready! But they came out the best.  Look at him, taking candid shots!  So that is why my feet are doing the extreme pigeon toed thing & look like little nubs!  This is shot behind Zach's house on his back stoop.

But do you see (what I think) how the cardigan gives me a bit more of an hour glass shape? This really works with black cardigans but I think wearing other color cardigans works too.   I add a belt for a bit more interest & to really define my waist.  I don't know if these things are true in fashion, but I think they work for me!

Details
skirt // thrifted
shirt // Forever21
belt // Target (from another skirt)
shoes // on sale from Khol's (I forget the brand)
black ring & necklaces // Icing's & Claire's
watch // Charming Charlies
cardigan // H&M
brown ring // Honeybean Boutique

Lately, Zach & I have been planning what we'll do once his lease is up.  Currently we do not live together (we only met like 6 months ago!) but we have been talking about it.  When we met it was like we'd known each other forever, so the normal idea of moving too fast didn't really affect us.  However, he is in the military & actually just ended his contract.  So, he's got to move back home or really move to Virginia in May.   If he moves back to Michigan, we'll be apart until we find a way to settle down or we work out how we'll make it work.

I get down every now & then when I think about it.  I wish there was a certain formula we could follow for these sorts of things.  Being such a worry wart about finances & the like, I am super nervous for the future!

Who knows.  You gotta take it one step at a time right?

Fan Fridays: How-to - Work It on Out - a fashion post

Yesterday I had two job interviews.
woot woot!
I think they both went really well & I am excited about the prospect of both of them.

While getting dressed for the interview (in a rush) I thought
'man, I should have looked up some outfit inspiration for these interviews!'

Usually I can put together an outfit with no problem...but there is a lot of second guessing when it comes to dressing proffessionally.  I am never quite sure how to look like the best prospective employee ever but also retain a bit of my cheery personality to set myself apart from the rest of the crowd.
I am an over all positive & really creative person, which I like to let people (& employers) know.
Some of my normal clothes are a bit over the top so I always make sure I keep it simple.

Here is some outfit inspiration:

Proffessional
click the images to be taken to polyvore
where you can find a list of all the items in this set

This is how I like to break it down
Classic   Pattern   Texture   Statement

I love classic shilouettes that accentuate the waist
Though it sometimes doesn't work for my figure, I love high waisted pants
& the illusion of a waist it gives me (I am very boxy)
These classic styles, I think, allow you to pull off pattern & texture
without looking like you stepped off the crazy train!
examples - fitted blazer, clothes that create a natural waist, kitten heels or flats

A big part of who I am involves color & pattern.
I like to look bright & cheerful like my personality.
Be careful though, you only want to have a subtle pattern & make sure it's not too busy.
example - like the blouse on the top left, keep it in a classic style that way you can get away with it
if you aren't too sure, put it under a cardigan or blazer
or opt for

In lieu of pattern, try textures.
Avoid huge ruffles & things that may get in the way
or accentuate your chest in the wrong way
The bottom left blouse is an example of subtle texture
if you're not yet brave enough to wear the one on the bottom right
Again, pair it with a cardigan or blazer.
I don't know if blazers ever went out of style but they are back for me!

On a normal day, I'd have a few pieces of statement jewelry.
Not so they'd compete with each other but just because I love jewelry.
Since the goal of this outfit is to high light your style while still earning respect,
only wear one piece of statement jewelry.
My advice: wear a ring instead of a necklace.  I don't want any unwanted staring art my neckline.
Don't wear two pieces at once unless one is understated
(would it then be a statement piece?)
example - ring + necklace in top right are two pieces that don't call out to each other

How do you still retain your personality in your work clothes?
Do you work at a job where you can express yourself fully?

What I Wore: First Friday - March 11

The first Friday of my spring break was quality time spent with my mom & sister.
I fought through the temptations of buying some shoes, some floral dresses, & a purse.

I did cave & buy a toffee nut latte from Starbucks.
I've been so bad buying coffee from shops lately. I said back in the summer that I was going to limit my buying of coffee from shops to reduce the daily trash I have.
But I love them so!

Anyway, I felt super confident in my outfit for Friday. I loved it:

please disregard the assorted debris in my parents' backyard.
the rigged up batting cage fell down during the last snow storm in January.
I don't even know the last time my brother's used any of the stuff in the back yard for practice..

shirt: thrift (a while ago!)
jeans/pants: Burlington Coat Factory
shoes: Payless
headband: made by me (look for tutorial soon-ish)
sunglasses: Claire's

I sort of was inspired by Zooey Deschanel but I felt like a bad ass Zooey.
Like her bitchin' bad ass sister or cousin or something.
These pants are my new favorite.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Fan Fridays: Tights Challenge

I am in love with tights & I buy them way too often & never wear them.  Therefor my goal for February is to wear tights every day & document it here on Five Sixteenths.  I am also going to try to wear a lot of my (comfortable) shoes since I have a bazillion & I never wear them.

I started avidly collecting tights a few years ago when I found some bright teal ones at Target.  At this time I wasn't as, errrrmmm, creative with my outfits as I am now.  You can always find me wearing something crazy & awesome now.

Here are some tights I wish I owned:

Currently (not that I am buying any more any time soon) I have 18 pairs, a number perfect for such a short month like February.  I have so many & I love them so!

If you want to take part of this challenge, let me know! I'd love to link to your blog & have a little button for you to use:

Get to counting those tights, the challenge starts February 1st!

Tempted Tuesdays: Cardigans

I love cardigans like I love cool weather! I have so many of them that each hardly gets equal love from me.  I found this really cool tutorial for a short sleeved cardigan or vest on YouTube.  The tutorial is really simple to follow & you probably have something in your closet that will work for it.

So give it a watch & then make your own:

all you need is a long & wide scarf.  Check out TJ Maxx or your closet for one you can use!
I love this little tutorial!

Tempted Tuesday: A Late DIY

So I've mentioned my love of Free People about a gazillion times on this blog.  Almost every Wednesday, the blogging team posts a Weds-diy.  This week, I couldn't resist reposting a tutorial.

Have you seen the sweaters/jackets with the patches on the elbows? Well thats exactly the inspiration for this tutorial over on the Free People blog.

Gather these simple supplies: needle, thread, safety pins, scissors, spare fabric, an oval shape (the sticker) & your sweater. Now follow these steps and create an awesome new sweater!

here's the cardigan I am going to use & the scrap fabric I have (that I adore!)

I can't wait!
