Make it Monday // DIY Essential Oil Recipes for Travel

If you haven't noticed from my Instagram feed, I travel a lot.  Like a lot, a lot.  We've been around the world a few times - Korea 3x (check this hashtag for the first trip & this hashtag for the second), Japan, Amsterdam (yay for Hema!) - and we've traveled home quite often.  Being that I moved 800 miles away from my family I like to go home as much as I am able.
this post may contain affiliate links, please read my full disclosure here.
the 10 ml glass bottles & spray tops were sent to me by Got Oil Supplies, all opinions are my own.

Traveling with an array of essential oils while possible isn't always practical.  Of course I've got a list of the top 10 oils I love to travel with but sometimes I need to be more compact.  Traveling with a diffuser can be troublesome as well so I've teamed up with Got Oil Supplies for this super easy, travel inspired DIY to help you keep your oils with you!  (ps. There is a coupon code at the bottom of this post just for you!)

Maintaining routine when traveling is very important.  We can get thrown off our rhythm and distracted from any self care rituals we've set put. We can find it hard to sleep in new environments and have trouble adjusting to a hotel room, a new city, or even being back in our childhood bedroom so keeping things close to us that provide comfort is a must.  For me, that includes my essential oils.  These guys give me a sense of peace & a sense of normalcy.  Not to mention some of them outright replace a few things I used to carry with me.  So lets get to the recipes.

supplies // roller bottles & spray tops from Got Oil Supplies (I'm using the 10ml size), witch hazel, water, fractionated coconut oil, various essential oils (I use only doTERRA CPTG oils, learn more here)

For each of these recipes we'll be using some sort of carrier.  I use that term loosely here because usually you'd use something like Fractionated Coconut oil to carry the oils - dilute them properly for topical application.  But for some of these we'll just be spraying them on clothes or a pillow and not necessarily the skin so there's not really a need for FCO in each recipe.

Sleepy Time Spray

This is like instant lights out! So if you have trouble sleeping especially while away this may give you some peace of mind.
In the spray bottle combine 5 drops Lavender, 3 drops Cedarwood, and 3 drops Vetiver.  Lavender is great for calming while both Cedarwood and Vetiver are grounding.  I swear, for me, any thing with Vetever is so soothing to me!  Top the spray bottle off with water.  Shake before you spray your pillow then nod off to sleep!

Deodorizer Spray

Stuff can get stinky if we've been traveling - especially in the summer - so a little deodorizer & fabric refresher can be much needed.  Combine 5 drops Purify blend & 5 drops Melaleuca in a spray bottle.  Top with water if you're going to be using on your clothes or use witch hazel if you've like to try for a natural deodorant.
I have yet to find something that helps me not stink but these oils work great for me on fabrics.  Spray a bit on the fabrics and let them air out.  Both of these oils have purifying & cleansing chemical properties.

Happiness Spray

My two ultimate feel good, get your happy on oils are Douglas Fir & Citrus Bliss.  This is literally happiness in a bottle!  Combine 5 drops Douglas Fir & 5 drops Citrus Bliss in a spray bottle and top with water.  Spray on anything & everything, any time you need it.  Make sure to avoid skin if you'll be outside as citrus oils are UV reactive.  But seriously, go ham with this blend!

After Sun Cooling Spray

This is a blend I used recently on my summer vacation & I have something else to add to it - witch hazel.  Witch hazel is great for the skin and when you add in other skin loving oils like Melaleuca & Lavender you've got a wining combination.  Combine 5 drops Lavender, 5 drops Melaleuca, 1 drop Peppermint (you can do more, I just find Peppermint to be very strong) in a spray bottle.  Top with equal parts Fractionated Coconut Oil & witch hazel.
You can either spray right onto the skin or spray on a cotton round and apply.  Applying with a cotton round is easier for the face especially if you've gotten a bit too much sun other wise just do a few quick sprays to cool off.

Chill Vibes Spray

Balance is an oil that I wish was in a roller bottle, a spray bottle....heck I wish I could get a 50 oz bottle of this stuff!  For me this is my zen oil.  Whenever I need a break or I need to really relax I bust this baby out.
Combine 10 drops with water in a spray bottle and spray on your clothes, etc when you need to just relax.  This is a perfect way for me to travel with this oil when I need it quickly.  It really helps me sink into a meditative head space easily.
If you hadn't noticed all of these blends use some of the top 10 oils for travel.  The problem with traveling with a ton of oils means the blends you're gonna make - in your hand, on your pillow, or in your travel diffuser - take up space because you've got to bring them all!  The slim profile of these spray bottles from Got Oil Supplies means they won't take up too much space.  In fact, they will only take up as much space as your roller bottles.  Love it!
These guys will slip easily into a small make up pouch or pencil case (hello Target Dollar Spot #amirite) so they won't take up space in your bag.  I've even got some labels for you to print at home and cut by hand or with your Cricut or Silhouette machine.  These guys fit perfect on the bottle - the are 1.5 inches wide by .75 inches tall and have a space to write your own blend names in permanent marker.  When you upload the PNG to Cricut Design Space be sure to erase the branding strop at the bottom & size it to 6.75 x 9.25 inches.  I also suggest this waterproof paper from Online Labels to print these guys on.

Now for the coupon code:

valid until 9/30/18

There's a ton of quality supplies, containers, etc for your essential oil blending, storing, and sharing needs. I especially love these purple glass bottles that were sent to me for this project because purple is my favorite color!  It is always nice to be inspired by your collections - sometimes plain old amber bottles just don't do it for me.

What are your favorite blends?  What are you going to pick out from Got Oil Supplies? Let me know in the comments!

Make it Monday // DIY Tub & Toilet Cleaner with Essential Oils

Tonight I'm hosting my second essential oil class!  This one is all about cleaning with essential oils but it's not your average class - instead of just saying 'hey essential oils are great to clean with! I want to share with you the science behind why essential oils make effective cleansers.  We'll talk about the science behind the chemical make up of oils that makes them effective - because chemical isn't always a bad word!

Today I want to share with you how to make a tub & tile cleaner for your bathroom that is super simple and effective.  Prior to using this scrub, I'd use a pretty common cleaner that I actually found very effective - except for the fact that I would cough every time I sprayed it!  Listen, I'm not here to tell you what to do.  I am not here to preach to you about certain harmful chemicals that can be in our everyday cleaning products because I'm sure you've already heard it.  I'm not here to make your life more complicated because now you have another thing to worry about.  I'm just here to share with you a simple and effective cleaning recipe that can save you a little bit of money and not make you cough when you clean.

Why do essential oils make effective cleansers?

Essential oils are the natural, highly concentrated essences of various plant parts.  Chemically, these concentrated plant essences are made up of various compounds with different chemical identities that make them effective cleansers.  For example an oil that consists of Alcohols, Phenols, and Ethers have surface cleansing properties.  Alcohols are mostly denoted with and ending of -ol.  Essential oils with alcohols include Peppermint (menthol) & Melaleuca (terpinen-4-ol).  These oils are naturally repellent & cleansing.  Phenols are a subcategory of alcohols also denoted with names ending in -ol.  Thyme & Oregano have these phenols.  Peppermint and Melaleuca also contain ethers that boost their surface cleansing properties.

Everything is chemistry & everything is made of chemicals.  Chemical isn't a bad word and it isn't always synonymous with toxic.  Though there are certain toxic chemicals sold in the cleaners you can purchase off of store shelves, it is also important to note that essential oils aren't a cure all or novel item.  Essential oils are highly concentrated essences - which is why we use or apply a few drops at a time.  As an example, excessive exposure to Peppermint oil has demonstrated toxicity.  It is important to note that this excessive exposure goes far beyond the recommended daily amount but it is still important to take caution when using essential oils, not just peppermint) around children.  It might be a good idea to keep children & pets from areas you've sprayed with a peppermint cleanser until the solution has dried.  Here is more information about the chemical make up of Peppermint and Eucalyptus essential oils.  I implore you to use common sense when using essential oils with your family including, but not limited to, storing essential oils properly - up and out of reach of children.

What essential oils are best for cleaning?

In the Cleaning with Essential Oils Class we'll talk mainly about Peppermint, Lavender, and Lemon as they are a part of the mini cleaning kit offered to anyone who signs up as a Wholesale Customer or Wellness Advocate during this class.  Below is a list of doTERRA essential oils that work great in homemade cleaning supplies:

How do I make an effective tub & tile cleaner?

What I look for in a cleaner for my bathroom is versatility.  I would really like to clean my toilet bowl with the same thing I can clean my tub with...because #lazy.  So a foaming, fizzing, and bubbling cleanser that will break up the grime really calls to me!  After making the bath bombs in a previous essential oil DIY I've grown to love the combination of baking soda & citric acid.  Here's how to make your own tub & tile cleaner:
supplies // baking soda, citric acid, lemon (or other citrus oil), glass jar or container, mixing bowl & mixing utensil reserved only for essential oil projects, dust mask
optional : vinegar, spray bottle
as a side note: Arm & Hammer baking soda is not cruelty free.  I keep forgetting to make searching for cruelty free ingredients a priority.  Just because it isn't make up doesn't mean it is automatically cruelty free.

Combine 2 cups of baking soda with 1 cup of citric acid in a bowl.  You'll want to wear a dust mask for this as the powders will enter the air, so protect your lungs!  Add in 10-20 drops (though I am usually heavy handed!) to the dry ingredients.  Mix to combine the ingredients well.  This makes enough to store in one large pasta jar or in two Target Dollar Spot large glass jars.
Store in a glass jar in a dark place.  Though dark amber or blue glass is recommended for storing essential oils, I've used jars I found at the Target Dollar spot & recycled pasta jars.  These should be fine containers if you plan to store your products under the sink or in a dark space.  Again, take care to store essential oils and cleaning products out of reach of children.

If your bottle doesn't have a sprinkle/shaker top, use a nail and a hammer to create holes.  Sand down the top of the jar to prevent cutting your skin on accident after holes are made.
To clean a tub, lightly moisten the inside of the basin & walls of the shower with water.  Sprinkle the cleaner generously over the surface.  Leave for 15-30 minutes then scrub, wipe, & rinse.  To add another level of activation, spray the surface with vinegar then clean.  The citric acid will react with the water on the walls of the tub/shower.  This will bubble and help to lift the grime.  Adding vinegar to the concoction will activate the baking soda which will also start to fizz.  Lemon essential oil is known to cut grease thus making it perfect to remove the soap scum and all around gross stuff left in the shower.  Yuck!
To clean the toilet, sprinkle the cleaner in a slightly drained bowl.  Make sure to get the powder on the side of the toilet bowl.  The citric acid will react with the water & begin to fizz.  Leave the bowl fizzing for 15-30 minutes then scrub.

If you're interested in joining in on the class being offered tonight, be sure to check out the Facebook event here & sign up for the class here.  The only way to attend is to register for the class through this linkYou'll get a free Ultimate Cleaning List with Essential Oil tips when you register.  You'll also find the link to the class in the email after you register.
Essential oils have changed the way I interact with cleaning products.  I find it super simple to make various cleansers using some ingredients I already have on hand and these powerful aromatic compounds.  If you'd like to learn more about essential oils, you can check out all of the posts on the blog here.  If you're reading to jump into using essential oils for emotional & physical wellness, click here for how to get started with doTERRA essential oils!

Make it Monday // DIY Bath Bombs with Essential Oils

YOU GUYS.  I am so damn excited for this DIY.  Have you ever made something and been like 'I understand how this is supposed to work, but I really don't think it's going to work that well.'  This DIY project surprised the HECK out of me with how much the end product FIZZED.  I didn't think it was going to be THAT FIZZY for an at home bath bomb!!  So let's get into it.
this post contains affiliate links, please read the full disclosure here.

The doTERRA product of the month for February 2018 is the Melaleuca Touch roller.  I don't have the roller but I thought I'd play around with the 15ml bottle I have.  This scent is a rather different one - it's sort of minty to me, but it is also woodsy.  The doTERRA website describes it as herbaceous and leathery.  The more I work with this oil, the more I understand it's scent so I thought I'd use it to make some fun bath bombs!  The blend used for these bombs is Melaleuca, Grapefruit, and Douglas Fir.  Here's how it's done :
supplies // baking soda, citric acid, essential oils, fractionated coconut oil, epsom & Himalayan salts, measuring cups, bowl, nitrile gloves, soap colorant, bath bomb mold or plastic ornaments for spherical bombs or a silicone mold, dust mask, protective glasses

Start by measuring out your baking soda & citric acid.  You'll want to wear a mask during the mixing part of this - the baking soda will go everywhere and you want to protect those lungs.  You'll need 1 cup baking soda and 1 cup citric acid.  I stocked up on citric acid when our Meijer started carrying canning supplies but you should be able to find this in your grocery store wherever they have their canning supplies, or you can purchase it online.  Add up to 1/4 of the epsom and Himalayan salts - I suggest adding only 1 tbsp of epsom and 1 tbsp of Himalayan.  If you add too much it will affect the way the bath bomb holds together.
Use your gloved hands to mix the dry ingredients together.  This is where the baking soda will really go flying so please, please use a mask!  Next begin to add your colorant.  Add a small amount at a time.  If you're using water soluble colorant you may notice a bit of fizzing.  I wasn't able to take a photograph because when that happens you need to work fast to blend in the colorant.  Keep adding and blending, adding and blending until the mixture is the color you'd like...but don't add too much that the mixture is starting to stick together.
Once the you achieve the color you'd like, add in your essential oils.  I added in 10-12 drops Grapefruit, 10-12 drops Melaleuca, and 5-7 drops of Douglas Fir.  Blend with your hands until it is well incorporated.  I want to make a note here on the quality and purity of essential oils.  I recommend using doTERRA essential oils as they go through a rigorous test to ensure purity and potency.  If an oil doesn't meet the Certified Therapeutic Grade standard set by doTERRA, the oil isn't used for production.  Essential oils you may find on your grocery store shelves can have additives that decrease the purity and the quality of the oils.  They may have synthetic proprieties even if the label says that the oil is a pure oil!
It is at this point that you want to check the consistency.  You'll want it to stick together like wet sand.  If you've ever played with that magic sand stuff, that's the consistency you're looking for.  The product needs to stick together when you squeeze it and stay together when you lightly drop it in the bowl.  Once its there, and if you need it, add it a couple drops of the fractionated coconut oil.  This will one help to release these guys from the mold and condition the water just a bit...since you won't need a whole lot.
Now it's time to pack the molds!  You can use a bath bomb mold but these plastic ornaments are perfect for this.  Be sure to pack each half tightly.  Use the palm of your hand to compress the mixture into the mold and use your fingers to press the outer edges down.  Make sure each mold is packed full then over pack (just a smidge) one half of the mold.  Working over your bowl, press the two halves together letting the excess mixture fall into your bowl.  Squish and rotate the two halves until they meet and close as well as they can.  Then repeat for the second mold.  If you pack these guys tight enough you can remove them from the mold with in an hour and let them harden up out on the table.

Essential oils can really affect your mood and your emotional wellness since they interact directly with the limbic system of the brain - the system responsible for memory and emotion.  Inhaling an the aroma of an essential oil passes the scent over the olfactory system - the system responsible for processing smell - and interacts with the limbic system.  Since scent is so directly related to our experiences, memories, and emotions, inhaling any scent sends a rush of feelings and memories into our awareness.  Working with essential oils can help you to align your thoughts and your mood depending on what mood you're looking to change or enhance.

This recipe makes two bath bombs if you're using the ornament as a mold.  I found some silicone molds at Micheal's and some on Amazon that I can't wait to try out.  This scent is great for relaxing but if you wanna make something perfect for when you're sick try using On Guard, Oregano, Lemon, and Melaleuca.  I honestly can't wait to try this one.
Taking a bath can be an active, restorative, and supportive act of self care...especially when you're adding essential oils to support your relaxation and rejuvenation.  On February 12th I'll be hosting a free online webinar on using essential oils for self care.  We'll talk about what an essential oil is, how essential oils stimulate and align emotions, the 3 pillars of self care, and how to create your own active, restorative, and supportive self care rituals. Click here to find the Facebook event where you can register.  Once you register you'll receive a FREE self care planner!
Essential oils have become a wonderful part of both my physical and emotional wellness in the past year and I want to share their benefits with you!  So I hope to see you at the webinar!
Happy fizzy bath time!

Make it Monday // DIY Makeup Remover with Essential Oils

As you may (or may not) know, I am trying to focus on moving to a cruelty free lifestyle.  (You can read my transition guide here.)  I'm focusing mainly on cleaning & beauty products this year and part of that, I'm realizing, is also going eco friendly.  I decided that I didn't need to be using something like a single use makeup wipe on the daily.  First off, I'm not quite sure what those things are made of.  Secondly, I'm already using some products that I know will treat my skin a little bit better.
this post contains affiliate links, please read my full disclosure here.
I wear makeup at least 3-4 times a week, often more, so I'm going through these wipes so fast!  Now I imagine the bags and bags of semi-fabric-semi-paper-towel-probably-heavily-plastic wipes that I've personally thrown away.  No more!  Now I use a more sustainable option that is nourishing to my skin.

supplies // fractionated coconut oil (or other carrier oil of your choice), essential oils, container

So, how do you make it?

This DIY couldn't be simpler - combine 5-10 drops of your essential oil of choice & fractionated coconut oil into your container.  The container I show above is only stainless steel on the outside, the inside is coated in plastic.  If you choose to use a citrus oil be sure your entire container is either glass or stainless steel.  The citrus oil can degrade the plastic and cause it to leech the plastic into your oil.

Daily, I use lavender, frankincense, and melaleuca (tea tree oil) for my skin.  The lavender scent is super calming at the end of the day!

And here's how to put it to use!

Use one pump in clean hands and massage into face to dissolve your makeup. It is seriously that easy.  As a note, be careful around sensitive areas - like your eyes.  Since the oil is heavily diluted, I personally haven't had any problems rubbing it around my eyes to remove mascara, etc.  If you'd like more targeted application, use 100% cotton rounds.  I've even heard of people sewing their own reusable rounds out of flannel and fleece to be more sustainable!
After you've massaged the remover over your face to break up the makeup, run a wash cloth under hot water (not too hot!) and place over your face.  Use this guy the same way you'd use your makeup wipe.  You may want to invest in some nice baby washcloths since they are a bit gentler.  Rinse the washcloth in hot water after use to remove the makeup & oil from the cloth.  The best part is you can wash the washcloth with your clothes!  Fractionated coconut oil doesn't stain fabrics - you won't find those horrible little oil stains like from an oily dressing on your clothes.

You could use other carrier oils but you may find that they aren't that great for skin, for example virgin coconut oil is considered comedogenic (meaning it is known to clog pores).  Fractionated coconut oil is thought to be significantly less comedogenic.  As a person with oily skin who previously used virgin coconut oil on my skin, I can say that fractionated coconut oil has really improved my complexion!  I'm sure the fact that I'm also using lavender, tea tree, and frankincense has helped too!

Essential Oils for the Skin

There are a lot of different essential oils on the market today so I want to make a note here on the quality of oils you should use.  Since our skin is our hugest organ and our skin absorbs what we put on it, it is important to make sure we are using pure essential oils - oils that lack any additives that may decrease the purity or potency of the oil.  The brand I suggest is doTERRA.  This brand provides Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils:
"The CPTG process certifies that there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants in their essential oils that would reduce their efficacy. doTERRA even goes a step further, putting all their products and the packaging through a battery of tests to ensure a long and effective shelf-life. This protocol ensures potency, purity, and consistency batch to batch." (source)

Above is a list of 6 essential oils perfect for use in your DIY makeup remover.  Each of these oils is said promotes healthy skin & a side benefit is the amazing aroma each oil offers.  It truly can make this simple act a mindful, self care ritual!  My skin has evened out and my makeup routine is so simple now - check out my 15 minute routine here.

Essential oils have become an integral part of my everyday life.  You can find the 8 ways I currently use essential oils here and sign up above to get my free ebook on using essential oils for practical & spiritual use!  If you'd like to learn how essential oils can change your mind, body, & spirit shoot me an email, I'd love to chat with you!
