Make it Monday // DIY Mini Journal using the Cinch

Guys - I'm participating in 30 Lists.  You may remember that I've tried this like two times in the past and failed horribly at it.  I've been working on my own listing journal and that has taught me a lot about this process - intention and priority are two of the words that journal has taught me - and I plan on finishing my 516 listing journal this coming weekend since it will be a 3 day weekend!
Mini Journal DIY with the Cinch
this post contains affiliate links, please read my full disclosure here.

But today's DIY is about creating a small journal using the Cinch tool.  This tool is one of my favorite high end craft tools and it gets very little use in all honestly.  So I thought I'd break it out for this little listing journal since I needed to whip one up in a hurry.  Let's get into it.

supplies :: Cinch tool, pliers, cinch 1" binding, at least 30 4x6 grid journal cards, 2 4x6 journal cards for cover, laminating sheets, laminator, scissors, assorted 3x4 decorative journal cards, assorted 6x6 paper pads, corner rounder, assorted washi tape, paper trimmer, library pockets (optional)
First, choose the 6x6 papers to use for this project.  I chose about 20 patterns to use from quite a few paper packs.  My inspiration for this journal came from two bright neon library pocket envelopes I had in my stash.  I'm pretty sure they came from the Dollar Tree in the teacher section at one time, but I'm not 100% sure.  The bright neon pink and electric green inspired the colors I chose from various paper packs.  The paper packs I used for this project are Amy Tangerine Sketchbook, Heidi Swapp Favorite Things, an American Crafts paper pad, and Pink Paislee Citrus Bliss.  Next, choose the coordinating 3x4 cards you'd like to use - the kits I used that went well with my color scheme were the Heidi Swapp Favorite Things and the Project Life Sunshine Edition packs.
DIY Journal
Using the paper timmer, trim the 6x6 papers down to 4x6 size. Round the corners with the corner rounder.  This is one of my favorite punches because it has multiple options depending on the corner radius you need for a project.  The sharpest radius is the one that matches the Project Life radius the closest.
Project Life DIY
Because these paper pads aren't double sided, the washi tape will create a 'double sided' look to the journal pages.  Place the tape along the side of the 4x6 grid card (it is easier to make a straight line this way), align the two journal cards wrong sides together, fold the washi tape over on to the patterned paper.  Repeat for as many 4x6 patterned papers you have.  You don't have to have 30 of them, it is better if you have just slightly fewer.  20 - 25 patterned papers should be good.
Using your Cinch tool punch the pages in the alignment you'd like.  I use the info printed on the Cinch as guidelines (kinda like how pirates use rules....just as guidelines) for punching holes.  But I also just make it up as I go.  To repeat the spacing I did - pull out the first two knobs as well as 10 - 12.  Leave the guide pushed all the way in & punch all the 4x6 cards excluding the front covers.  Once the front covers are laminated, pull out the guide just a tad (one click) and punch the two covers.  To punch the 3x4 cards push in all knobs 1 - 7, and pull out all knobs 8-12.  Bring the guide back to its original position and punch all 3x4 cards.
Assemble the cards on the coil, back and front covers right sides together (back cover on the coil first) then add your inserts the way you'd like.  Use the back end of the Cinch to close the coil.  You can see detailed instructions in this post.
And now you're done!  I love this little guy - a great way to use up scraps and create a cohesive look.  I've found the way to create something I really like is to form it around an inspiration piece and come at the project with intention.  Some projects can be created all willy nilly but some projects need to be planned.  I really wanted this project to be super simple so the only other elements I'll add into this listing book are the scraps from this project, a black pen, and highlighters.  I do plan on stamping the list numbers - I'm not going by date because I know I won't finish it like that! - using some ink and stamps I have already.  If all the work is done, all I have to do is write.  And I wanted all elements to fit in a small pencil bag!

Do you do any journaling?  Have you tried any list challenges?

xoxo, Moe

30 Lists // Top Ten Tips for Listers

As I've mentioned a few times here on Five Sixteenths, I am not only a sponsor for 30 Days of Lists in September but also an affiliate so I am doing my best to promote 30 Lists these days before September.  If you'd like to learn more see the recent Make it Monday post or click here.

I am an avid list maker.  If you've ever checked Five Sixteenths or my instagram and seen a list of goals, a to do list, a monthly wish list, then you know what I mean! Lists are totally the way I keep on track, can't do it any other way!  Today I wanted to share with you my Top Ten Tips for Listers to get you in the mood for September's 30 Lists go round:

1. Practice your handwriting.  No, your lists don't have to be perfect but practicing your handwriting will give you a creative boost to use your own handmade fonts in your list book.  It's a great way to discover what your little doodles can turn into.  You may also improve your penmanship in general & get loads of handwriting compliments :)

2. Don't take the process too seriously.  I've mentioned before here & I know a lot of other people are the same way, but sometimes I just don't want to mess up the pretty clean piece of paper I have in front of me.  But you don't get there unless you try.  So just start out by doing it!  The list from Monday is a great practice list to get you started.  Write it out a few times to see what you may want the theme of your list book to be.  Or, just have at it.  Remember, there is no wrong way to do it!

3. Keep tidbits from your month.  You can take this project even farther by making a monthly scrap book.  Since this is a snapshot of your life at this time...keep fortunes, movie stubbs, receipts, anything you like & tuck it away in your list book...which leads to the next thing...

4. Find a list book with an elastic closure (or any closure/pocket for that matter!) If you want to keep little tid bits you're going to need a way to secure them!  I plan on adding a better little closure on to my tiny book.  This way you can create a better snap shot of your life.

5. Use the prompt as it applies to you.  Do you want to take it a different route than everyone else? Great! Doing so will not only allow you to be more creative but it will make the process all your own!  But don't agonize over this...the first thing that pops into your head is great but you can totally use these prompts to go anyway you like.

6. Don't stress over time.  The great thing about 30 Lists is that really it only takes 5 minutes to write out the list.  Keep a little notebook & a pen and just write it down.  If you aren't a fancy pants person, then a no frills guide to your life in September is perfect!  Plus it gives you an excuse to buy a new pen!

7. Keep Going.  If you miss a list (I am notorious for this!) don't fret.  You are doing this at your own pace.  Even though 30 Lists is a great project to do with others, don't worry if you fall behind.  This is your mini scrap book or art journal or list book.  It's for you!

8. Talk it up! Connect with other bloggers.  There is a lovely private forum to connect with so many other listers.  Share ideas, get to know each other, & make friends.  I am so bad at forums so the way I choose to interact involves twitter/instagram & blog comments. Those are my favorit social networks & I find I don't suck at them! If you're down to make friends, find what works for you!

9. Experiment.  30 Lists is about discovering your creative list making self.  If you've ever wanted to experiment with art journalling this is the great time.  Experiment with what you love in new ways, find new things to try, etc.  Don't settle on simple color combos, make your book bright! Step outside your comfort zone & try something new.  I am just a pen & paper lister and wasn't satisfied with my first scrapbooky type list book.  So I am going back to basics (pen & paper) and experimenting in new ways with things I know. Incorporating Instagram in to my book somehow will happen at the end when I have all my pictures collected.  It doesn't hurt to expand what you know either!

10. Don't compare.  When I signed up for 30 Lists the first time, I knew it was going to be a challenge. I am so not the scrap booker type! Not in the least! I got discouraged because it seemed like everyone was making such awesome keepsakes.  But then I realized that is so not the point of 30 Lists! Sharing is great & the community is so supportive so you don't need to feel that you aren't doing something right.  After all, this is YOUR September!

Make it Monday // Make a List - 30 Lists Preview

I mentioned last Friday that Five Sixteenths is sponsoring 30 Days of Lists for it's 4th session in September!  And guess what...registration is now open! If you haven't heard of 30 Lists, let me fill you in:
30 Lists is a great way to make a scrapbook for a whole month! Only about 5-10 minutes a day are needed to make a great memory book!  Prompted by a topic a day, fill up a book with small lists to get started in journaling.  I joined 30 lists (way back in the beginning) to kick start my journaling & blogging ideas.  A list a day, that's all it takes to come away with a great snapshot of your life through September. (learn more here!)

30 Lists is a great opportunity to connect with other cool people (not just bloggers) & give you something to blog about!  I joined 30 lists the first go round not only to participate in something cool but I wanted to have something relevant to blog about while I was finding my blogging voice.  While I'm tying up the ends here on the Blogging 101 eBook, one of the key points I am focusing on here in the end is Networking.  Blogging has a lot to do with networking! If you don't connect with other bloggers, you won't make friends! (Which is a great part of blogging.) So, a great networking opportunity to dive into this September is 30 Lists.  If you're down for it, click here to sign up or click the button in the sidebar & kick of your September right!  (Also, if you enter before August 15th, you're entered to win a set of 3 Kerri Smith books! Preeeetty cool!

Now for a little pre-September list:

This wee was actually a momentous meal week.  Not only did I get to eat a lot of yummy food but Zach & I made our first meal together as a cohabiting-couple.  I actually plan on doing a lot of instagram crossed lists & this one was no exception.  Some meals from this week:
This is creamed peas on toast! So gross looking but so yummy!

If you want to check out all the sponsors, ambassadors, & hosts check out below.  We' all got a post up to give you some great list making ideas!

Blog Project: 30 Days of Lists

In the spirit of falling in love with journaling from my Illustration Journal project, which I am still filling up when I have time, I've decided to participate in the 30 Days of Lists journaling project.

30DAYSButton

This project is perfect if you have very little time to journal or are just getting started.  For me it's both, I have a full class schedule, blogging, work, side projects, art, & I am passionate aobut it all and I have never really journaled before.  I love the look of artists art journals filled with pretty images, text, & refelctions of themselves.  This is why I've chosen to start this project.  You can check out more about it here.  This project is hosted by quite a few of my favorite bloggers I love drawing inspiration from!

my journal made from an old cereal box, paper, & yarn
My problem with journaling is I don't know what to journal about!

The first prompt was posted today, but since I was running late, as usual, I didn't grab my notebook! Oh no! No worries, I need to add some more to so that will give me time to journal.

Are you a seasoned journal-er? Is journal-er a word?
