Sponsor Interview // Rebecca of Lucky Rainbow Designs

Hey there Five Sixteenths readers, I've got a great person for you to meet today! If you haven't popped by the feature sponsor's blog this month (Lucky Rainbow Designs) then you totally should.  Full of positive inspiration & lots fo creativity.  Get to know Rebecca better through her interview below:

1. Why did you start blogging?
I started blogging as another creative outlet in which to connect with other creative people. I had  friends who were bloggers and I loved reading their blogs so it felt natural for me to give it a whirl! I'm also the kind of person who likes to try new things on a regular basis, meet new people whether its in person or online and generally a peek into other peoples lives, especially those living outside Ireland where I'm from and live.

2. What is your favorite part about blogging & the blogging community?
I love that you can post a question somewhere and that someone will go out of their way to assist you. I love how honest many bloggers can be about aspects of their lives, something which I would like to do more of, and I generally love finding a new blog, especially one with an incredible design. I suffer from blog design envy all the time! I also just love sharing aspects of my life - I try not to overshare, but anyone who knows me will tell you that usually within 5 minutes of meeting me, you know my life story!!

3. What is the hardest part about blogging?
For me, I would say its finding that work / life / time to blog balance. I also work a full time job which at certain times of the year is demanding so I really have to work hard at organizing my time, my blog posts and of course developing interesting content to read. I do worry that my posts are not that interesting and for this reason I've been moving my blog towards a crafty lifestyle blog as opposed to just all about crafts and craft tutorials etc.

Also, I sometimes struggle with the technical side of things! I did a small happy dance last week when I figured out a teeny tiny bit of blogger design coding. That was a great day!

4. What is your favorite feature on your blog?
Probably the 'Today I heart..' series which sees me search the internet for bits and pieces to drool over and also 'Positive Quotes' which according to the stats on my blog draws the biggest amount of readership. It seems there are ALOT of us out there searching for quotes to make our lives more inspiring or complete!

5. I see a lot of positive quotes on your blog! Is this where you find inspiration?
I am the kind of person who 'likes' positive quotes, but I wouldn't say I live my life by them. I generally a half glass full person anyways, but sometimes you need some inspirational quotes to kick start your day or perhaps bring you back down to earth when you think you're life is experiencing some drama, when really it wasn't that important at all! As mentioned above, it draws alot of readers to my blog, and I often wonder are there are alot of sad and unhappy out there sitting at their keyboards looking for some inspiring words and that kinda makes me a little sad if I'm honest!

6. How did you get into card making?
When I was younger I found a box of cards that were given to me as a child over the years. My mum had saved them and i was intrigued that she kept them. She obviously felt they were important momentos to keep. I'm sorry to say I don't know where that box is now! BUT, I've always loved giving and receiving cards and the reason I got into card making was that in Ireland I felt there was a real gap for a quality handmade card that didn't cost the earth. I was coming accross very simple handmade - like cards which were selling for about €6 euro ($9 or $10!!) and I thought this was crazy! So way back in 2009, I made my first card for my friends wedding and everyone said "You really should make more of these!"

The funny thing is, even back in Art College, I had a name for my mini business. I also loved rainbows and found them to be particularly lucky, so hence LuckyRainbow was born.

7. Give us the best blogging advice you've ever received!
Be yourself and stop looking at others! Meaning, yes you will look at other blogs, their ka-zillion of followers, amazing images and house ready photos but know that it probably took them time and energy and years to create this and get to that particular space. Blogging is a process. If you look back at my original posts, you'll cringe at how back they are, but if you skip a few years, you'll see how my blog has developed and that happens for us all, so long as your willing to work hard at it!

8. Give us the best advice on life you've ever received
Oh so much! - For work related issues, the best piece of advice I received was "They're only complaining to you, not about you." - I was the person who used to cry if someone complained to me in work, but when someone, a former manager and still a friend today gave me the above advise, it changed my thinking...forever! I still dish that same piece of advice out to younger colleagues.

For life / everyday advice - I'll draw on a Dr Seuss quote "Those who matter, don't mind and those who mind, don't matter". As someone who turned 30 last year (gulp!), this advice is incredibly true. You will find that even though with age, more winkles appear, you also become more content and the bits of drama that ruled your life at 20, 21, 22 won't even cause you to blink at 29,30,31. (This is the part of being 30 that I love!)

(Now for the fun ones!)

9. What is your favorite fruit?
Strawberries! I even grew my own last year, they were perfect and delicious!
10. What is your favorite color to wear?
From Monday to Friday, I'm in a suit for work purposes, so at the weekend its my time. By that I mean I pull out every colorful item in my wardrobe and style it up! Its hard for me to chose just one colour, I'd say for evening attire, you can't beat a red dress, but during the day, you could meet me and I might perhaps might just look like a walking rainbow complete with a lush colour of lipstick! Told you I loved rainbows!

Feature Interview // Maddie of Thriftary

Hey, hey, hey! I have loved this 31-day Blogtober thing....but I can't wait to get back to posting about life.  Really, I've got like soooooo much to share about our house, about how I've been doing self-employment wise, about a lot of stuff!  But for now, I'll just share with you some awesome answers & fabulous stuff from Maddie over at Thriftary, the Feature Sponsor for the month of October!

1. Why did you start blogging?

Oh man. How my intentions have changed. I started this blog when I first married Burley, to keep my scattered family posted on what was going on in our lives. That quickly changed into me falling in love with graphic design and delving into a whole new world!

2. What is your favorite part about blogging & the blogging community?

I love that I can, at any time, hop online and read about a bunch of inspiring women, doing inspiring things. It's like constant encouragement to keep growing and learning. I also love that I have actually made some amazing friends though the blog world, that I wouldn't have had a chance to meet otherwise!
From her post How to Shop at a Thrift Store Part 2. (She found awesome stuff!!)

3. What is the hardest part about blogging/being an indie biz owner?

Well, since blogging is not yet able to be my full time job, I would say that the hardest thing is trying to find time for it all! Not only just creating posts, but making sure that post content is fresh & not thrown together. Making sure it is all very me and very inspired, rather than falling into the "oh crap i have to post something today... I'll just talk about what I have seen on Pinterest" trap.

4. What is your favorite feature on your blog?

I have recently started posting some videos of me singing and playing songs that I have written. I had never really found forum to share my own songs before, and the blog has proven to be a really fun and half-way anonymous (not sitting in front of a live audience) way to do that.

5. Give us the best blogging/business advice you've ever received?

The best advice I have received is to find my voice, and stick to it. Early on, I feel like my blog was just a mishmosh of me and a bunch of other blogs I had read. It didn't TRULY sound like me. Once I kind of got rid of that "what if people hate my potty mouth" feeling, I just started writing like I talk, and people have responded really well to that. And I guess if some people don't like me... They have stopped reading my blog. And that's OK because no one has told me they have done that, so I haven't had time to feel self-conscious about it :)

6. Give us the best advice on life you've ever received?

You can pick your friends. You can pick your nose. But you can't pick your friends' nose.

7. What is your favorite fruit?

Hands down, peaches. Love love love peaches. Not because I lived in GA for most of my life, but because they are the fruit of the gods.

8. What is your favorite color to wear?

I am a sucker for a good mustard color. Or mint. that is a really hard question. Maybe mustard and mint together? Ah. I dont know. Mustard. No mint.

Thanks so much Maddie! If you'd like to connect with her please check out her awesome blog, follow her on twitter, & check her out on facebook!

Feature Sponsor Interview // Diana from Livy Love Desings

Can you believe August is nearly over? I totally can't! I've still got a load of things to do!  But today I want to introduce you to Diana of Livy Love Designs.  She's got a beautiful blog & shop, so I hope you'll pop by!

1. Why did you start blogging?
I started blogging like everyone does when I got married.  It started out as a family blog and then progressed into a design/DIY/family blog.  I started my shop right after I had my daughter in mid 2010.  I started to design artwork for her nursery and realized I could do this for other people.

2. What is your favorite part about blogging & the blogging community?
My favorite part is the people I meet.  I have met some of my closest and best friends through blogging and I know I wouldn't have with out that.

3. What is the hardest part about blogging/being an indie biz owner?
The hardest part is the competition for me.  I will be honest, sometimes I feel like I might not be the best and I need to step up my game but thats only because I usually am comparing myself.  I need to knock that off and keep on keeping on!

5. What is your favorite print in your shop?
My favorite print would have to be any of the hand drawn ones because I put so much effort into them.  Lots of Control + Z and messing around with colors.  So what you see most likely came a LONG way!

6. Give us the best blogging/business advice you've ever received?
Don't compare your weakness's to someones strengths.  Just because you haven't had a new follower in a few weeks or great sales in your shop DOES NOT mean you are bad blogger/shop owner.  You need to get the word out on your shop/blog and that will get more activity!

7. Give us the best advice on life you've ever received?
Be true to who you are.  No one likes someone who fakes it because we all can tell.  Just be yourself!

8. What is your favorite fruit?
Strawberries

9. What is your favorite color to wear?
Pink!!

Please check out Diana's lovely shop & blog.  You can also keep up with her daily musings on Twitter!

I just love her designs & can't wait to hang my state print in our kitchen when we get the new house! I love the print so much.

Feature Sponsor Guest Post // Katie & Her New House

If you didn't know, Katie (last month's feature sponsor) & I used to be room mates.  Since we both just made big ol moves, I thought I'd give her some time to come up with her sponsor spot guest post.  Since moving is stressful enough, why would you want to be stressed about writing for someone else's blog??  So here she is to share a bit about what she's done in her new house.

Lately my husband and I decided to buy a house.  We found the perfect place for the two of us and our pup, put an offer and now its ours.  Funny how life can find a way to make things challenging: my husband got called for a temporary deployment the day after we signed all the papers.  It's been an interesting process, but so far it's been fun.  For me, the theme for August is "making a house our home"
After the hubs and I picked some paint colors for the bedroom (Gypsy Rouge and Smoked Oyster) I felt like the room needed something else.  Of course I haven't gotten around to unpacking the wall hangings, but I needed an easy accent to compliment my fine paint job.  (Well, I probably shouldn't quit my day job, but its a good enough paint job for me!)

I noticed all of the wall plugs and light switch covers were dingy and old.  Rather than spending $5 each to replace them all, I got a $4 can of hammered bronze spray paint, and went to town.

So far, it's been a nice little touch.  I'm just about set up in the bedroom other than wall hangings.  Next stop, painting the bathroom and setting up the kitchen.

You can connect with Katie on her blog or on twitter.  Her whole house is coming together rather nicely.  Look at little Cody there...so adorable!

Feature Interview - Katie from Muddy Pup Pottery

Well goodness gracious it's Tuesday.  I am so antsy for this weekend I can hardly control myself!  I'll be packing up & heading to Michigan in T-minus 4 days.  Yay!  Today I want to share with you the lovely lady behind Muddy Pup Pottery, Katie:

1. Why did you start blogging? I used to write a lot in journals when I was younger and loved to go back and read over my thoughts over the past week, month and even year.  I decided I wanted to get back to writing my thoughts, and sharing useful tidbits I've found over time.

2. What is your favorite part about blogging & the blogging community? The connectivity and collaboration.  I love seeing what other people are doing and getting ideas from theirs.  I know I may not always have the best ideas by myself, but with a little inspiration who knows what could happen!

3. What is the hardest part about blogging? Not doing it when I'm at my 9-5 job.

5. What is your favorite feature on your blog? You know, I really love all aspects of it.  I have had my own website URL for at least 10 years, and converting it into a blog styled website was the best decision I ever made.  If I had access to $5,000 of software on my home computer, that would be awesome.  But really, who wants that when you can edit your website for free and host it for 1/10 of what it was before?  Plus, I get the pleasure of blogging, networking, and connecting with other people like myself.

6. Give us the best blogging advice you've ever received? I was once told to remember why I blog and continue to blog for that reason.  I know lots of people write about what they thing people want to hear.  But if you're writing because it makes you feel good, then who cares!   There are so many people out there who think differently and have different interests than you that you can never please everyone, so why not start with pleasing yourself!

7. Give us the best advice on life you've ever received? Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things.  It's silly but that's the biggest thing I remember my dad always telling me as a kid.  Now that I'm grown up (supposedly grown up...) I have to remind myself of this all the time.

8. What is your favorite fruit? Mangos.  Or kiwis.  Wait, it's gotta be strawberries.  Oh, but I love watermelon with a dash of salt.  But then again I love love pineapple...

9. What is your favorite color to wear? Honestly, black.  I love wearing lots of different colors, but you can use anything to jazz up black.  But if I had to pick a color it would be turquoise.  It's so bold and happy.

Well there you have it, a few fun things to get to know Katie from Muddy Pup Pottery.  If you'd like to connect with her, head on over to her blog, visit her shop (it's on vacation because she's moving but there is some awesomeness up in there!), follow her on twitter & facebook!

If you'd like to be a feature sponsor on Five Sixteenths for the month of September (August is already filled) pop on over to see the perks, then shoot me an email!  Have a great Tuesday!

Feature Sponsor Guest Post - Satellite Wall Art Tutorial

Oh my gosh you guys.  Jen from Motu Viget is so cool.....wanna know why? She has an awesome DIY for you all today.  This is super cool & I can't wait to try it out!  I can't believe how cool this is, check it out:

Konnichiwa! My name is Jen and I blog over on Motu Viget. I write about my adventures living in Japan as well as other important things like life goals and dessert. I'd love it if you popped over to say hi!

I'm really honored to be able to write a guest blog for Five Sixteenths. Moe and I may be a world apart at the moment but I know we're both in for big changes this summer. She's anticipating a move to be with her sweetie, Zach, while I'm preparing to move back to the U.S. after three long years abroad. Living in Japan has really been amazing and I know it will forever be a part of my life. Some places just stick with you, like your home town, first apartment or (in my case) a little city called Aizuwakamatsu. In honor of those special places we all have, I'd like to show you an easy wall art DIY to help you keep them close wherever you are.

First, you'll need to choose which places you'd like to feature in your art. I chose my neighborhood in Japan, the apartment my husband and I lived in during our first year of marriage and my childhood home in Michigan. Using Google Earth, which is free to install, do a search to bring up the satellite image of that area. Play around with  the zoom and placement to find a shot you like. You'll notice that streets and other locations will be marked on the map at first. Disable these labels by unchecking all the boxes at the bottom of the sidebar.
Now, disable the sidebar itself by clicking "View" and unchecking sidebar. Since we're using the free version of Google Earth, we will need to take a screen shot of the satellite image. Be sure your cursor is at the top or bottom of the screen so it doesn't appear in your image! Take a screen shot and save the image. Repeat this process for however many places you'd like.

Google Earth is pretty awesome, but the image quality isn't always so great. We'll need to use some photo editing software to fix up our screenshots. (I use GIMP and love it. It's free! Learn more and download it here.) Crop your image to remove the menu bar, of course. My satellite images were a bit washed out, so I adjusted the levels and increased the contrast. I also added a vignette layer and played around with the curves until I found an effect I liked. Satellite images look really cool with a vintage or antique photography filter. Play around with them until you find something you're happy with.

If you have some photo paper on hand, print away! I sent my husband out to the convenience store to print out a few sets. (What a nice guy.) I wanted a mat around the photos, so I sized them to 3.5x5 to fit in my 5x7 frames. Feel free to make yours as large as your resolution will allow. Here are my final, printed images:
I love seeing the contrast in the different places I've lived. The differences in population density are very apparent! I hung my set of three photographs in our kitchen and I definitely plan on bringing them with us to the U.S. Perhaps I'll keep adding to the set for every place we call home!

A Little Disclaimer: All satellite images © 2011 Google. And remember, you can use Google Earth imagery for personal use, but cannot sell it to others. View that policy here.

See guys! Isn't this the coolest! Honestly I can't wait to try this out when I move. If you'd like to give a huge awesome compliment to Miss Jen, head on over to her blog, connect with her on twitter, or say hi on Facebook.
