Trend Tuesday // Five Eye Palettes for Fall

If there is one thing I love, it's a good rosey pink eye palette.  There are quite a few of all rose gold or all mauvey pink eye palettes in my collection and I can't wait to bust them out for the fall.  Who am I kidding, I'll bust them out any time!  I have however been neglecting my eye palette collection.  For the last few makeup baskets I've posted I've only been using singles or some quads from the drugstore.  I want to break back into some of my most love palettes and bring out some that I've only tried a few times.  Each of these have rosey tones and some great complementary shades to create some great fall looks.
this post contains affiliate links, please see my full disclosure here
L'Oreal La Palette Nude 1
I've only busted this one open a few times.  I think I had it in a makeup basket once, previously, but I was impressed.  It is fairly expensive for a drugstore palette (however I would recommend this one over the 10 pan palettes from Maybelline - I've got a review here and a first impressions here).  This palette has an assortment of mattes and shimmer shades - in the perfect combo.  The three matte shades are beautiful blending shades plus a great deep brown that can create a wonderful nude smokey eye.  The lightest shade on the far left is actually a shimmery shade and not matte as the picture makes it look.  Each of the shimmery shades are more like a satin finish where as that lightest shade looks like there's some glittery bits.  Not bad - just not matte and not like the other shimmers!
These pans are huge for any palette and the color payoff is great for a drugstore palette.  The shades can go from subtle to buildable.  If you can get this on a 40% off sale at Ulta or even part of a buy one get one 50% off (make sure you pick up the other La Palette Nude 2 to get on for 50% off!) I'd suggest it.

Lorac Pro 1 Palette
This is a staple palette.  If you ever get the chance to get a Lorac palette - do it!  I have the 1 and the 2 and some other smaller palettes and love the quality of the eyeshadows.  So buttery, so pigmented.  If you're afraid of applying too much eyeshadow you'll need a light hand with this!  The top row is all matte and the bottom row is all shimmer.  These shades do kick up a lot of powder and as you can see the palette gets super messy - I can't keep it clean.
The shades in this palette are great for fall.  Not only is there a mauve matte shade - my favorite blending shade - there's a coper, an orangey color, and I love the gray.  These shades don't blend away easily and you'll get a distinct look between each shade.

Exposed 3
This is a super close dupe to the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette.  I picked this on up on Groupon in a set of all there Naked palette dupes - Exposed 1, 2, & 3.  This is made by Beaute Basics and really makes me want the Naked 3.  The palettes are actually on Groupon currently, though not in the deal I got but still for a pretty great price.  (Additionally if you sign up for Ebates there is 6% cash back at the time I'm writing this post...hot damn!)  Anyway - this is a go to palette for an all rose gold look.  This palette has 3 matte shades as well - a nice highlight shade, a nice rosey mauve, and a deeper brown-mauve.  The other shades are shimmery, not chunky glitter.
The color payoff is awesome for the price as well.  I would say it is better than the L'Oreal La Palette Nude but not as great as the Lorac Pro.  Very decent for a beginner and way more affordable (if you grab in on a deal!) than the Naked 3.  I was reaching for this palette until I got the smaller version - the Wet n Wild Smoke and Melrose palette from the drugstore (it is great for travel). If you have that in your collection you can totally get a great rosy look as well.

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette
This palette has a bunch of different tones for fall.  I love the shade that I believe is called Peanut Butter.  It is the burnt orange shade in the middle, on the far left.  There are deeper rosey shades in this palette as well.    There are 5 matte shades - including a large matte highlight shade - and 11 shimmer/glitter shades.  The gold in this palette is to die for and would be a great look for fall.
If you're into neutrals with a pop of color and shadows that are very easy to work with, this is your palette.  The color payoff is also amazing on these shadows with out blending away.  These can be built upon to get a more intense look and the deeper shades can create a smokey look.

Ulta Rose Gold Palette
This is a new one to hit the drugstore and it is also a take on the Naked 3 style palette.  It is structured almost like the Lorac palette in that the top row is shimmer and the bottom row is matte. This one has a lot of shade similarities to the other palettes listed - there are a few mauve blending shades, a gold, a matte pink, and a great champagne color.  The shade Breathless is a beautiful matte brown.
These shades perform well, too.  They are easy to work with, easy to blend.  They aren't as smooth as the Lorac shadows but perform as well as the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette, I'd say.  You won't get a multitude of looks with this palette though - the shade range is pretty one dimensional.  You have the lights and then the darks. You can get a distinct natural look and a distinct deeper, smokey look.  Not really the dynamic palette like the others listed but still pretty great for the drugstore!  If you're into being not intimidated - this is a great palette.

I've mentioned before in this post on saving money on cosmetics, but Ebates is the way  to go for saving money on cosmetics online.  Ulta is currently having 3% cash back through Ebates and then if you use the $3.50 off $10 for the drugstore products...you're on your way to saving $$$$.  I'd see if you can find like the Lorac Palette on other sites that may have more cash back through Ebates.  Sign up here.

What do you recommend for Fall?  Any go to looks you have?

Maybelline The Nudes Palette Review

Ok, so today I wanted to share my thoughts on a very sought after product from the drugstore - the Maybelline The Nudes palette. First off, don't worry if you haven't found this product yet, it is going to be permanent so just keep looking and don't fret. Secondly, I think you only need this product if you're just starting out in your make up collection. I'll go in depth in this review but now you know how I feel. If you want to know more about the product hitting the shelves, then keep reading

From the Website

Maybelinne's first 12 shade collection to create infinite looks featuring bold, beiges, sultry sands, brazen bronzes, and over the top taupes. Put together in such a way that the eyeshadows combinations can be broken down into duos, trios, & quads.

taken from the Maybelline website here.

First Impression & Application

The palette comes in a hard, black plastic case with a really nice font design. The packaging is really sturdy making this palette good for travel. With a price of $11.99 it's an affordable palette option from the drugstore. You can sort of tell from looking at it where the duo, trio, & quad layouts are. This gives the beginner make up lover an idea of where to place shades & to create different looks. None of the shades are too powdery - they all kick up very little powder and they aren't chalky or patchyn - and the color pay off is pretty impressive. They blend well over the eye & work together nicely. You also can create your own look from the shades and aren't limited to the styles they suggest.

Wear Time

The wear time on these is pretty decent just like any good quality drugstore eyeshadow. I would compare the quality to the Maybelinne quads and say they have about the same lasting power. In fact I'm pretty sure they are the same formula as the feel the same & wear the same. I know that sometimes across different products in the same brand quality changes but these are pretty much comparable to the smaller quads. Personally I have been using a MaryKay Cream Shadow as a base for my eye looks recently and those don't budge...so these last pretty long throughout the day on a good primer.

Since the colors in the palette are quite similar, sometimes the individual colors get lost when blending. Some colors end up looking the same but if you're into it you can also get a very subtle look.

Overall Impressions & Recommendations

Like I said at the beginning of the post - if you have a huge make up collection, or even a modest one, you probably don't need this. It's pretty average quality for the drugstore & you probably have something a long these lines in your collection. Some of the colors are similar - I hope you can see that in the photos above - so you're not getting a huge variety in eye looks here. However, if you are just starting off getting into make up (maybe you're a teenager or younger professional that doesn't do too much with make up) I would highly suggest this to you. The color aren't intimidating & you have a guide to show you were to place the shadows. Because they are natural you're not going to go crazy overboard all over you eyelid. I would only recommend this to someone who is a do-or-die Maybelline fan or someone who is just starting out in their own make up adventure. Even if you don't wear a lot of make up but maybe want one, super affordable palette to branch out with this is for you.

I hope this was helpful and that my recommendation made sense to you. Overall I was pleased with this palette but it wasn't something so spectacular that I really needed to have it.

xoxo, Moe

Coastal Scents Revealed Palette Review

Happy review time again!  Today I want to share some thoughts on a really awesome eyeshadow palette for you today - the Coastal Scents Revealed Palette.  This is a palette that is super affordable & very comparable to the Naked palettes from Urban Decay.  I love this palette because of the colors & because its so slim it's easy to travel with!
From the Website
Smooth powdered shadows.  Easy to blend.  Slim palette with twenty shadows.  Not too much info from the website there but they have quite a few pictures!  Information taken from the Coastal Scents website here.
First Impression & Application
This palette arrives in a cardboard box (a thinner cardboard box, like a standard little protective box) & the palette itself is made of thicker cardboard, something reminiscent of the Naked Palette or the Lorac Pro palette.  A stiff, durable cardboard that makes the packaging slim yet protected.  This cardboard can get dinged up from traveling but its not going to fall apart.  Additionally there is a strong magnetic closure for being a cardboard palette!  I'm not worried about this popping open in my makeup bag.  There is no mirror in this palette which disappointed me when I opened it because there's a huge surface area for it.  There is a plastic protector over the top of the shadows that you can keep in the palette or remove.  There are no color names however.  The twenty shadows come in two rows, are set in metal pans, and set into the cardboard.  They are pretty close together but the pans are big enough that you're not going to cross contaminate the colors.  Of the twenty colors 5 are matte - a nice beige highlight, 3 medium brown blending or crease shades, and one dark matte black.  The rest are shimmery.  (When I look for a palette matte blending & highlight shades are the keys - see my what to look for in an eyeshadow palette video here.)

As for application, these shadows are all very smooth.  They blend nicely together too.  I love using this palette because it's nearly effortless to get an awesome look.  All of the neutral shadows can give you a multitude of wonderful looks.  Since there are twenty shades it's most comparable to having a set with both the types of colors from the Naked & Naked 2 palettes.  The top row has warmer colors & the bottom row has cooler colors.  You can layer, blend & pack on color until you're hand hurts.

Wear Time
I find that these eyeshadows were wonderfully with a good primer.  I can go for the most part of a day at work (about 8 hours) with the color on my lids.  Around the 6-7 hour mark they start to be noticeably fading & creasing.  Not in a bad way.....actually if you're looking at yourself in the mirror the color is still noticeable but a little faded in the crease.  The colors are vibrant and really impress me with their wear time.
Here you can see the shimmer coming out in that copper color

Overall Impression & Recommendations
This palette is super versatile & great for travel.  If you love neutral shadows but you don't want to pay for Urban Decay's Naked palettes, this is a great option.  The colors are vibrant, easy to blend, & the lasting power is pretty impressive.  You can get a variety of looks from this single palette and recreate any looks you've seen done with the Naked palettes.  And at $19.95 (but it's often on sale, sign up for Coastal Scents emails!) it is ridiculously cheaper that two of the Naked palettes!

Purchase you're Revealed palette here.

E.L.F. Baked Eye Shadow Review

I'm trying to get back on the product review train here because I've got a lot of products in my collection & have a lot I'd like to say about them!  Today I'm sharing four of the Elf Baked Eyeshadows that I picked up from Target a bit ago.  I'm now seeing Elf Cosmetics in places like Meijer, Wal-Mart, & Kmart in addition to Target.  So these amazing (yes amazing) cosmetic line is becoming more & more available.  Anyway, here are my thoughts on these baked shadows:
 From the Website
Silky & blendable formula provides smooth and even application.  Rich Pigmentation for a beautiful effect.  Infused with active key ingredients Jojoba, Rose, Sunflower, Apricot, & Grape to nourish & hydrate.  Long lasting & shimmering color can be worn wet or dry - wet is more vibrant.  Taken from the website here
First Impressions & Application
From seeing these eyeshadows on the shelf they are gorgeous.  I love the sophisticated packaging of the Studio line of Elf products.  They are usually characterized by black, matte packaging.  The packaging of these eyeshadows is a little different - the doomed, baked shadow is under a bubble of clear plastic on a black, matte disk with a snap closure.  At first look I fell in love with the look of the texture of the eyeshadow in the pan & the color range.  There are 10 beautiful colors - I have Enchanted, Toasted, Bark, & Burnt Plum.  You get .12oz for $3.

When I first opened the packages I wasn't impressed with hard texture of the shadows.  In fact, I packed them away for a while.  I kept bringing them out & swatching them dry and just wasn't impressed.  I think I must have broken them in because I suddenly got a lot of color payoff from them dry.  I don't do the wet baked eyeshadow thing - so I swatched them the way I would wear them which is dry.  You can see the swatches below.  After breaking them in I found they applied nicely with a flat brush or a blender brush.  My favorite of these four is enchanted - it's a lovely, nearly duo chrome champagne/gold color.
swatched left to right : toasted, enchanted, burnt plum, bark
left to right : toasted, enchanted, burnt plum, bark
Wear Time
Overall I would say these don't last any longer than any other eyeshadow.  Obviously, they will last longer with a primer or other base underneath.  You can create a whole look with these shadows & I imagine a one-shadow look would be perfect with these!  Wear one wet over the lid the blend out with the dry shadow into the crease.  I find that these do apply more evenly & last better over a base.  I like them over something thicker like a Maybelline Color Tattoo.

Overall Impression & Recommendations
These are pretty nice but maybe not for the price.  Don't get me wrong....Elf has the best price range for great quality, but I think you should snag these as a part of a 50% off sale.  They aren't too expensive if you want to experiment but picking them up at $1.50 a pop is a much better deal!  They aren't the best thing Elf has to offer in the eyeshadow department but they aren't bad.  The colors aren't that unique - pick up Enchanted if you pick up one at all - but they have the versatility of being wet or dry.  I guess you could say I'm 50/50 on this.  Out of all of them I recommend Enchanted just because of the color.  I'm not going to tell you they suck...I guess I just feel slightly moved with these as they are cheap enough to experiment with.

Elf offers so much to try at such an affordable price.  Pick them up from retailers above or from the Eyes Lips Face website here.

What are your favorite products from Elf?  Have you had success with these shadows?

Three Great Eye Shadow Primers

Making you're eyeshadow stay all day is a huge goal for all of us..is it not?  I'm always faced with creasing & it sucks.  I'm not sure if I have unusually oily eyelids or perhaps it's just the name of the game but only a few eyeshadow primers really work for me.  I'm always up for trying more but lately I've been turning to these three guys:
Maybelling Color Tattoo in - This is one of the color tattoos from their matte collection last summer I think.  I've never been a fan of the color tattoos as regular eyeshadows but this one as a base is perfect!  It evens out my lids & is just tacky enough to hold shadow but not creamy enough to slide around my eye in an hour.  The texture of this one is kind of weird and to me it feels a bit thicker than the other, shimmery color tattoos.  Sorry, but these are no longer available (so sad) but I'd suggest scouring your Big Lot's or just keeping an eye out for them because sometimes these things pop up in those types of discount stores.

Wet n Wild Take on the Day Eye Primer - As you can see, this tube has had a lot of love.  This used to be my one & only go to eye lid primer.  I also have the shimmer version of this & they both work nicely.  The actual product smooths on clear unlike the other two in this post.  I like the tackiness of this as well - just enough hold, not enough to crease.

Milani Shadow Eyez pencil in  - This is one I'm turning to more & more as it is more of a drier formula.  It evens out my lid since it's in that almond color and since it's a bit lighter than my skin tone it can act as a brow highlight, too.  I love the slightly less tacky texture of this pencil & it smooths on the lid like a dream.  The best thing about this pencil is Milani added it to their permanent line!  It was limited edition but now you can buy it on the shelves.  Don't you hate that all the best things are limited edition?
Left to Right:
Maybelline Color Tattoo, Wet n Wild Take on the Day, Milani Shadow Eyez in Almond
These have been in constant rotation in my make up routine lately.  I try to trade things out every now & again to make sure a lot of my collection gets an even amount of love.  Other eyeshadow primers & bases just haven't lived up to these three, though!

What helps your eyeshadow to stay crease free all day long?  Any recommendations?

Flower Cosmetics Color Play Creme Eyeshadow Review

Today I want to review for you some of my favorite cream eyeshadows.  I haven't been a big cream product fan until recently - I just feel like they don't play well with my skin.  When I got the Be A Bombshell One Stick in my Ipsy bag one month I thought I'd give more cream blushes a try.  But I gave up on cream eyeshadows because I don't really care for the Maybelline Color Tattoos.  One day I caved & bought some of these Color Play Creme Eyeshadows from the Flower Cosmetics display in Wal-Mart.  I have to say I do quite like these as eyeshadow bases much more than I like the Color Tattoos.
From the Website:
Enriched with Vitamin E for antioxidant protection.  Long-wearing formula.  Water infused with a weightless finish.  Lid-smoothing texture.  Buildable, blendable coverage.  Moves beautifully during application then sets with out creasing.  Easily removed with make-up remover. Taken from the Flower Beauty Website here.

First Impressions & Application:
The packaging on these is rather pretty & looks high-end.  Much like the L'Oreal Infallible Shadows, there is a stamper underneath the lid.  Pulling the stamper back I noticed that some colors stuck to the underside of the stamper while others did not.  The creaminess & whipped texture of this product almost turned me off because I thought they would instantly crease.  A little seems to go a long way when it comes to application & they smooth on to the lid evenly.
I apply these with my ring finger all over my lid.  They blend well & do set to a powder finish.  They feel less creamy than they look making them one of my favorite bases.  I don't use a primer with these as I'm afraid they will crease but use them as the primer to my eyeshadow looks.  Each is shimmery, there are no matte shades in this line.

Wear Time:
I love using these shadows as bases because they don't crease on their own & they prevent other eyeshadows from creasing.  They are easy to blend meaning I can take a brush to the colors themselves & blend into the crease or blend other eyeshadows over them.  My current favorite color is Mums the Word which is a beautiful, shimmery pink color.  And though I don't use it a lot the deep rich chocolate color of Cocoa Camelia is beautiful!  I find the wear time to be impressively long & these are great for a quick look.
Overall Impressions & Recommendations:
These are my favorite cream eyeshadows.  Compared to the Maybelline Color Tattoos that crease & seem to break down on me, I love that these Color Play Creme Shadows dry to a powder finish.  They work perfect on my seemingly oily eyelids.  These shadows live up to the claims on the website as well.  I do find them long wearing, light, and easy to blend.  I would recommend these to anyone who's not too fond of cream shadows.  If you feel that cream shadows breakdown on you & crease through they day - these might work for you.  They do smooth out evenly over your lid & aren't as thick feeling as the Color Tattoos.  Additionally, I wouldn't recommend using a primer with them as that might alter the powder finish of the product.

These are my favorite ways to start an eyeshadow look.  If ever I have no idea what to do, I start with one of these!

What are your favorite cream shadows?  Any tips for working with cream products?

xoxo, Moe

Buying Make Up // What to Look for in a Neutral Eye Shadow Palette

I've got another little video for you here today!  Pardon the lighting/quality in this video - I'm playing around with lighting since I don't have that great of a camera to film with.  Annnnnnndddd this video was filmed a week or so ago, so don't mind the talk of snow.  It's actually been raining like crazy here! And finally, sorry for the weird thumbnail - I changed it, but I don't think it stuck!
I love wearing neutral eyeshadow - I seriously go to it everyday.  It's easy, clean, and just plain great looking.  The key things I'm looking for in an eye shadow palette are mainly the shade range & range of finishes.  I want to get multiple eye looks with one palette & get the most bang for my buck.  I want to be able to pick up one palette to do my eyes - not two or three different palettes, single eyeshadows, etc.  You want to look for not just pretty colors but ask yourself it's its really something you're going to go to & use often.  This is what I do now that I know I'm looking for a range of shades & finishes in a palette.  My favorite form this video is the NYX Parisien Chic palette because it's small yet varies in shades & finishes enough to create different looks with a single palette.

I also talk about comparing what you want to what you already have - for example, I didn't pick up the Sonia Kashuk Eye on Matte palette because I knew I had an Elf Palette that I could get an all matte look from.  But I hardly ever do an all matte look!  I'm also thinking about ease of travel.  While I don't travel a lot it's nice to have your favorite things come with you with out bulking up your bag!

I'm turned off from palettes if they don't have a good range of matte transition or blending shades - shades to blend other colors from the eyelid to the crease - or palettes that are all shimmer or all matte.  One exception is the Sonia Kashuk Eye On Shimmer palette that just has the most beautiful shades!  I couldn't pass it up!  I also think the shades in the Eye On Shimmer palette are able to be used by themselves.  This palette I could use by itself just because the colors are great.

My recommendations:  Elf Neutral Eyeshadow palette at Walgreens, Elf Weekender palette, NYX Parisien Chic, Bare palette from Profusion at Walgreens (I found last year's edition & the shadows look the same for the same price at Dollar General)

I'd love it if you subscribed to my youtube channel as well!  You can find it here.  I'm having fun exploring beauty & make up and sharing it with you!

Trend Tuesday // Naked & Neutral Eyeshadow Palettes

Ever since singing up for Birchbox & Ipsy I've been feeling the urge for high end make up.  I think I mentioned going into an Ulta for the first time a bit ago & having to control myself!  High end make up is just so appealing!  But let me tell you want I do: I get online & look up dupes or even sets that just look/act the same.  Because even though I want to spend $50 on an eyeshadow palette, that ain't gonna happen anytime soon!  I've had my eye on the Naked Palette which is filled with so many beautiful neutral eyeshadows...but that mess is $50 (do you know how many awesome things I could do with $50 besides by one eyeshadow palette?).  So I thought about getting the Naked Basics palette.  While $27 sounded a bit better.....$27 is still a bit too much.  So, what am I to do? Find awesome drugstore alternatives! Here are some great trios, quads, & palettes if you're looking for a natural look & more variety - I think I'd rather spend $27 creating a custom look, ya know what I mean?  (Plus a lot of brands have a neural option if you want to just buy one thing and not pick & choose)

NEARLY NAKED

Eyes Lips Face
Or Elf as it's so tenderly called has great affordable make up that is rather good quality.  Their online site has much more to offer than your local Target or Meijer (I've just seen elf in Wal-Mart too!).  These two palettes are from the Studio Line & the Essential Collection.  The geometric one (here) is sold for $3 & the more traditional compact (here) is sold for $3 as well!  These both seem to be more like the Naked Basics palette featuring 6 colors.  Some of them seem to be pretty close too!

L'Oreal
These are the Colour Riche quads & the two featured here are Army Brat and Cupa Joe.  I like the Cupa Joe quad because the colors are more neutral & less gold.  But these Colour Riche quads also come in a variety of colors not just neutrals.  So if you want to have a collection more on the Naked side of things you could pick up one like Love to Hate Me which has a blue color in it & a darker black.  But if you're looking for a go to neutral look with out too many options, a small quad like this is great - enough to change it up but not too much so you feel comfortable.

Revlon
These are the Revlon Photoready Primer + Shadow palettes that feature eyeshadow & a primer.  Impressionist & Metropolitan are totally nude collections but you could also spice it up with something like Graffiti that has a really nice blue in it.  Again, these have a bit more to them (colors + the primer) but not too much where you feel overwhelmed.  You can create a simple go to look!  These are a bit more pricey though - anywhere from $5 - $7 (or up!).

More Eyes Lips Face!
This is a great big fully neutral palette!  If you're looking for some insane variety in your neutral looks this sister palette to the 100-color Studio Eye Palette is the winner.  100 colors might be too much by 32 is just enough right?  This sells for $10 on the elf website, a steal compared to the Naked, Naked2, & Naked basics palette!  This palette has the richer dark neutrals but is missing colors like gunmetal, toasted, hustle, & creep. This 32 palette comes in a few color combos & each has a few neutrals scattered around as well so you can totally get your color fix with one of the other 4 options!

Wet n Wild Color Icon Trios
These are my favorite! They are so affordable & great quality.  Compared to elf, Wet n Wild eyeshadow trios are the best! At around $2.99 a pop, they are pretty affordable too.  I've been considering depoting mine & putting them in a little custom tray to create my own neutral palette because a lot of the trios have great neutral colors mixed into the bright crazy colors.  These trios are so affordable, I seriously suggest just buying them all!  (Same with elf, buy it all girl, buy. it. all.)  They even have a new Pop Art Craze collection with insanely bright colors but Muse & Carouse has the prettiest matte brown!  The best neutral trio is Walking on Eggshells.  I go to this one everyday!

NYX Natural Palette
It's the closest thing to Naked Basics in that it's a six pan palette laid out in the same sort of way featuring a range of neutrals from light to dark.  I honestly don't own anything NYX but this is something on my to collect list because I hear the quality of NYX stuff is awesome!  You can find NYX online or at stores like Ulta for drugstore prices.  I'm loving how this little palette is sleek & pretty close to the real thing in layout.  This palette is about $7 & there's another one called Wicked Dreams with 24 eyeshadows that seriously have some pretty close looking colors to the Naked palette!

Anyway, these are just a few ways to get a cool neutral eye with out having to spend mega bucks.  I think that all of these are really great quality for drugstore products especially if your short on cash or just not willing to shell out a lot for something for your face.  I think a good drug store collection is just as comparable to a high-end collection!

What eye look do you go to?  Are you a neutrals fan or do you need more color?

xoxo, Moe
