Make it Monday // Desktop Organization Background

I'm still sorta in back to school mode and am still craving some more organizational DIY stuff so I thought I'd go for another one of my favorite types of tutorials on the blog and that is tutorials using PicMonkey!  If you don't already know - PicMonkey is my favorite online photo editing and simple design platform.  You can use it for free, online at PicMonkey.com and if you want to test out the Royale feature click this link for a free 1-day trial to decide if you want to upgrade.  In the tutorial we'll use PicMonkey to create desktop wallpaper to organize your files.  This desktop background isn't relegated to just back to school season - you can use an organized desktop in general even if you're not in school.  It's great if you've got a lot of blog content to organize, documents for clients, family documents, etc. Ok, onto the tutorial!
First you'll need to determine the display resolution on your computer - PicMonkey is very helpful with that.  Head on over to the PicMonkey webpage & hover over Design.  Select Custom, then using the provided proportions, click Make It.
From the first screen you are directed to, click where it says No fixed proportions under the Crop heading.  Scroll down until you find the selection that says (your screen) beside it.  This gives you the exact measurements to fit your screen.  How helpful!  (I didn't do this at first and made an entire background at the wrong resolution....good for you though because both the ones I made are free at the end of this post!)
I chose a color palette from ColourLovers that I liked and went from there but you could also choose colors of your blog or branding as well.  Set your canvas color, add some design elements to make a nice background, then begin to add your boxes.
I made a list of the types of boxes I wanted to categorize my files in so I'd know how many boxes to make.  I chose Current Projects, Blog, To Print, and File Later.  But you could choose whatever you need.  If you're a student you could put class names if you type a lot of papers or work on a lot of projects.  Your desktop is supposed to house things you need quick access to....mine totally didn't do that...so make your titles things you access most often.
Add the boxes and arrange them in an order you like.  They could be all vertical, all horizontal, or staggered like mine.  Then add another little shape to act as your label and fill in with text.
At some point during your design process you might need to zoom in to make sure you are clicking on the correct element you're trying to move.  If you have a mouse, simple use the center scroll wheel to zoom in & out.  Or mouse over the bottom right of the screen to manually zoom in & out.  You can then use the box that appears to move your canvas over to the area you need to edit.
Once you believe you are satisfied, save your work.  But do not close out of PicMonkey!  If for some reason you set this image as your desktop then hate the widths, the layout, or the design all together you can simply go back to your PicMonkey screen and edit.  If you close PicMonkey your work is gone forever...so just don't close it just yet.  You may even want to organize your desktop before closing the PicMonkey browser just to make sure you do in fact like it.  I would also recommend saving a copy of the image with out the labels in case you want to change them later.  You can just open the blank image in PicMonkey and add new labels.

once image loads right click & save to your computer

Now organize your life!

How do you keep your desktop organized?

xoxo, Moe

Pantone Color of the Year Free Printable

I mentioned earlier that I've been working on expanding the Five Sixteenths Brand...this includes working on a STUDIO blog covering all things design related.  The first post went up yesterday with 5 tips on starting a blog of your own in the new year & the second post went up today.  Two posts, two days in a row probably won't be the norm over there, but I couldn't wait to share the awesome 2013 desktop, device backgrounds, & printable created in honor of the color of the year.

You can check out all the backgrounds here

The STUDIO blog will be updated probably once or twice a week with inspiration, freebies, blog tips, recommendations, etc.  I think it will be a lot of fun to have a second blog that doesn't need as much updating as this blog.  I'll also let you know when a new post is up from the STUDIO blog over here on Five Sixteenths.  You can also always find a link (as soon as I put it there!) in the side bar.

I have this background on all my devices & love looking at it.  Is it weird that I'd like for all my electronics to match? I don't even like using cords that don't match the color of the device.  For example, our PlayStation has a white cord charger for the controller.  Thankfully Zach found a black cord in his box of cables (it's like a tangled cord catastrophe in there!) to replace it.  I didn't even know it bothered me until I felt a bit more relaxed now that they match.  Maybe I'm just crazy!

Anyway, I hope you have a lovely Thursday.  I've already put a dent is some of the things I needed to get done today!

The April Desktop

I thought I wouldn't get around to posting an April desktop background today but I squeezed it in.  I've been in love with the Graphics Fairy blog for quite a while & finally got around to using an image.  The amazing flower image is from the Graphics Fairy here.  I love its colors, it's perfect for spring!

I've also included an iPhone background for your lock screen & home page

Hope your April has started off great & no jokes were played.  I really don't like April Fool's Day because I embarrass easily.... I don't want anyone to pull anything on me :)

Hello March // Free Desktop Wallpaper

Hello Thursday & hello to March! I thoroughly enjoyed my Leap Day yesterday & spent the evening creating these wonderful desktop backgrounds for you.  If you haven't signed up for the Newsletter yet, I suggest clicking here & doing it because you'll get access to 2 other colors combos!  The Newsletter will be sent out around noon EST.  So hurry up!

(this is a jam packed Newsletter event, let me tell you!)

I don't know about you, but it takes way to long to get to my calendar on my iPhone. You have to click the button, swipe to unlock, locate your calendar (if your aren't on the first page or the app isn't on your dock), etc.  That is too damn long! Alright, it's not really that long...I just like having a calendar at my fingertips!  So here is a matching iPhone calendar that fits perfectly on your lock screen!

Also today starts 30 Days of Lists! I am so flipping excited! I can't wait to jot down some lovely lists.  I participated in the first go round but am so excited to get involved in this one.  Having another little book of lists is going to be awesome.

On another note, I haven't really shared this on the blog (because I don't know how to blog about it) but I am a resume queen.  Meaning that, while I don't consider myself an expert, I have a lot of experience with what employers are looking for when looking at your resume.  I know what will make you memorable & what will make you stand out.  I've been thinking about posting some of my resume tips but I've also been thinking about doing a little ebook of sorts on the matter.  Does anyone think this will be useful to them??

I wrote a workbook on resumes for when I teach my resume writing class where I work.  It's all about marketing yourself, highlighting your strengths, & tailoring a resume to suit the job your are applying for.   I'd love to re-do it for a creative sort of professional resume.  I really like resumes & job hunting (I don't really like the job working part!).

Are you ready for March? Do you have any goals for this month?
